All on his own?biased indian said:he was atleast good enough to win the ODI world cup for his country
And that makes him one of the 5 greatest batsmen in ODI cricket? Heck Chris Gayle cruises past him statistically and I wouldn't put him near the best of the best... yet.biased indian said:and his battting avg after 1996 is a sligthly better 36.5 to the 31
ahh sarcasm, such a powerful weapon. its just amazing how 3 of the top 5 players are barely even mentioned in a thread for great ODI players. what makes things worse is that players like jayasuriya get more acclaim than them......SJS said:Thank you so much for the certificate.....sir !!
Coming from YOU its a RARE honour
why do u think jayasuriyas over rated?tooextracool said:ahh sarcasm, such a powerful weapon. its just amazing how 3 of the top 5 players are barely even mentioned in a thread for great ODI players. what makes things worse is that players like jayasuriya get more acclaim than them......
by failing in the semi finals and the finals.......biased indian said:he was atleast good enough to win the ODI world cup for his country
doesnt his average say enough?Hit4Six said:why do u think jayasuriyas over rated?
at the same time jayasuriya practically pioneered pinch hitting a great ODI tactic, fair enough Tendulkar, Bevan etc may have been more consistent/may be more consistent but give the Jayasuriya his due he is a great ODI batsman, just outta curiosity where would u rate jayasuriya then?tooextracool said:doesnt his average say enough?
jayasuriya is one of those gilchrist like players, they'll have one brilliant innings and then fail in the next 5. consistent? no
oh he is a goodODI batsman, but no one would put him in the top 10 let alone a top 5. top 10 in the world ATM maybe, but no one whos not consistent and whos average gets worse when he plays outside the sub continent deserves to have his name even close to a top 5.Hit4Six said:at the same time jayasuriya practically pioneered pinch hitting a great ODI tactic, fair enough Tendulkar, Bevan etc may have been more consistent/may be more consistent but give the Jayasuriya his due he is a great ODI batsman, just outta curiosity where would u rate jayasuriya then?

a common misconception, it was mark greatbatch who pioneered pinch hitting and it was martin crowe who came up with that idea. jayasuriya only took it to a different level.Hit4Six said:at the same time jayasuriya practically pioneered pinch hitting a great ODI tactic
how successful where greatbatch and crowe at it? and is jayasuriya a better pinch hitter than them?tooextracool said:a common misconception, it was mark greatbatch who pioneered pinch hitting and it was martin crowe who came up with that idea. jayasuriya only took it to a different level.
look at the results of the 92 world cup, NZ went undefeated till the semi finals despite having only 1 real world class player.probably would have won that game had crowe been on the field in the 2nd innings. the 2nd highest wicket taker in the side after danny morrison at the start of that world cup was martin crowe. so id say it worked fairly successfully.Hit4Six said:how successful where greatbatch and crowe at it? and is jayasuriya a better pinch hitter than them?
Greatbatch was indeed a great success at least in the 1992 world cup.Hit4Six said:how successful where greatbatch and crowe at it? and is jayasuriya a better pinch hitter than them?
Jayasuriya is not a great ODI batsmen. He would not get into a World XI and will play a good ODI innings every 5 or 6 times he's at the crease. What part of that constitutes great?Hit4Six said:at the same time jayasuriya practically pioneered pinch hitting a great ODI tactic, fair enough Tendulkar, Bevan etc may have been more consistent/may be more consistent but give the Jayasuriya his due he is a great ODI batsman, just outta curiosity where would u rate jayasuriya then?
It doesn't matter how successful he was at it. The fact is that he was the first to truly institute it.Hit4Six said:how successful where greatbatch and crowe at it? and is jayasuriya a better pinch hitter than them?
Yes, and then for 4 years it wasn't adopted.tooextracool said:a common misconception, it was mark greatbatch who pioneered pinch hitting and it was martin crowe who came up with that idea. jayasuriya only took it to a different level.
