McGrath is the Cristiano Ronaldo of cricket. Effective as **** but just as boring.

Surely no one gets excited watching him bowl or do anything really? The way Steyn excites people.

In the end sport is also art.

Steyn is the Breaking Bad to McGrath's Sopranos. Pretty sure most who prefer one show over the other also choose the corresponding bowler. It's a generational thing, I think.
Yeah I don't think it's any accident this forum considers the best quicks to be some order of McGrath, Steyn, Marshall, Ambrose and Hadlee. You just need to take a look at the demographics. The best of 1980 to present are in the spotlight and guys like Lindwall miss out.

Lillee, Thomson and Wasim are probably underhyped here compared to their standing in the mainstream, but that's to be expected in a nerdier scene where people will go through numbers with fine tooth combs and we probably lack the Pakistani numbers to get a Wasim Defence League going as well.

I assume this is comment on the number of posters from the different cricketing countries?? In which case,

Voted for Richard Hadlee as I think he was a lone wolf carrying the whole team on his shoulder meaning he would have had to do both -making the pressure all by himself with a very little support and also squeeze a wicket by the way of it, for McGrath I believe a lot was going for him as the Aussie team that he was a part of was as ruthless as they come, perhaps among the all time best two or three teams that have ever been, so you can imagine the plight of other teams - they were always under the pressure of huge scores and pressure from both ends of wickets aided by a very great fielding.

Yeah, it's a shame this wasn't a public poll as it would be really interesting to see the votes. This doesn't seem representative of CW to me. And I mean that as no disrespect to Hadlee.

What do you mean, Hadlee is losing? You were expecting McGrath to win easily? That wouldn't seem representative of CW to me. In mr_mister's very popular top 20 fast bowlers ever thread, Hadlee came 4th with 459 points and McGrath was 2nd with 480. In other words, McGrath by a smidgen, which is perfectly consistent with the results of this vote.

And in that kind of proportional points allocation vote that is exactly how I'd expect it to play out. What I am saying here is that my perception of CW was that most people seem to think that McGrath is second to Marshall, and very slightly (a smidgen, in your words) ahead of Hadlee. Which would mean that in a head to head vote like this where people just vote for a single winner without proportion or nuance, yes I would have expected McGrath to win more easily.

I'm not even arguing whether that ranking is right or wrong. Rather, making an observation - which may well be mistaken, but it's hard to tell in an anonymous poll - on how I thought CW views things. At the moment Hadlee has 43% of the vote, and based on all I've seen or read from contributors here, I'd not previously have thought that 43% of CW thinks that Hadlee is a greater bowler than McGrath.

I don't know about other voters but in this comparison I voted for Pigeon. But in the Hadlee Ambrose comparison I believe, like most others here that Hadlee is ever so slightly above Ambrose. However, I ended up throwing Amby a 'mercy vote because I didn't want it to be the landslide that I expected....

And back in 2010, Hadlee was in top 2.

Hadlee for me. Played for a weak team, but that didn't stop him from being one of the greatest ever. Arguably the finest bowler ever and I am not exaggerating it.

One interesting co-incidence.

Hadlee's stats between the same age as Mcgrath's debut and retirement is as below.

He averaged 21.65 which almost exactly matches with Mcgrath's career average of 21.64:-O

Tbf, he only probably placed 2nd because McGrath faced Marshall in the semis and most people had Marshall over McGrath. And Hadlee faced off against Ambrose.
