Geraint Jones... a forgotten hero?

If Flintoff rediscovers his batting form, and Broad continues his and develops his bowling to be Test Class, England won't need their keeper to be capable of batting higher than 9.
Why have someone batting at nine when you can have someone good enough to bat at seven or even six?

It simply makes no sense.

That is true, although that theory also needs the availability of a genuine Test class wicket-keeper - at the moment that means Foster.

Indeed - with hindsight, at least (can't say I wasn't a considerable advocate of him for near enough all his Test career). Jones was always a poor batsman, much as I always believed he had potential. Sadly, he just wasn't as good as I hoped he was.
He was capable of scoring reasonably for Kent though. He's forgotten how to do that.

Well if you have bowlers good enough to bat at 7 and 8, then why not play a great keeper who can bat at nine? Now we all know Broad is not - at this point - good enough to play Test Cricket due to his bowling. But Flintoff is, and he is good enough to bat at seven.

The snag is finding the great keeper. I like to think that if Bob Taylor was around today he would be chosen and would bat at 8 or 9 but I have my doubts with the current selection policy. Foster's the only International class keeper available but he's not good enough to test the selectors resolve.

Probably yeah. I won't pretend to be an expect on wicket-keeping, as I have said before. A few years back, this situation would have had people screaming for Chris Read, ICL-aside I think there were issues with his keeping that meant he needed to offer more with the bat, though I wouldn't be averse to him having another crack.

That being said, Ambrose hasn't kept that badly as far as I can tell, and if he is to bat at 8, his average is definitely good enough for him to hold that position.

Let's be honest, any keeper we pick will score a ton early in their career and then slowly deteriorate

LOL nah, we all make mistakes.

I agree that he was very vocal, some felt too vocal. Was only ever going to be a short-term measure though.
