Compton>Kohli>Amla>May for me
I don't rate May as highly as others
Why

May has the best home record there I reckon, by far the hardest conditions (bar Compton) and he still averages 57.3 at home, Kohli at 55.3 with far easier wickets, and then you have Amla at 46.6

May had harder conditions at home than Compton too. Denis played on some good batting wickets in the first half of his career at home.

Kohli has also regularly ghosted in tough conditions at home unlike May who repeatedly stood up incl series v very good Australia&SAF attacks. Wickets that were very helpful for seam&spin. Kohli has more accomplishments away from home though.

with Compton it's hard to say for me, a Post-Prime older Compton who had regressed averaged 54 on 1950s English pitches

Amla's were tough as well but yeah May's were the toughest and he comes out with flying colours. But his away record is just not sufficient for me to rate him above Amla, whom I rate relatively high to others here

I don't really rate his Australia record any worse than the other two in discussion, fair on his South Africa record.

His AUS record is quite similar to Amla's for me as well, but Kohli is better than both in Australia imo. SA is the big issue for May and his WI record is below par as well. Amla meanwhile has a great record in both IND and ENG

well, I don't really rate Kohli's record in Australia much anymore, He had the luck to tour in the time of the flattest aussie pitches, and while I rate Kohli"s number of hundreds, I think Hashim and May having ATG knocks in Australia balances it out. Oh, WI is just him having a good tour in 54-55 and a bad one in 1960, but he was far too ill in 1960 and went home after 3rd test, don't think one can blame him for that failiure.
