Frequent ball change made by England Team

Comment I made in the other thread,

Surely, we'll have something come out of this. Maybe a standardized set of ball that are as beaten up as the one that is requested to be changed...obviously has to pass through the ring test though...

Stokes tried it first in Edgbaston test 2022... That was peak stuff & almost blatant cheating.
Tried it in Ashes after that & Aussies noticed it & were the first to raise objection. Ponting and Khawaja
Stokes tried in First test in India but didn't managed to do it & stopped for the rest of the tour.

Tried successfully this summer vs Windies. No one called it out.

Tried it in this series but caught red handed.
Nasser almost said they are doing it deliberately.
Then obviously Bell and Matthews raised it.

Bowlers asking for a change of ball long pre dates Bazball. The decision is the umpire’s. If the ball needs to be changed then it’s in accordance with the rules.

Also, happy to be corrected on this but I believe the one at The Oval last year that Aussies are still sore about was entirely umpire-led after the ball got damaged hitting Khawaja’s helmet.

Just that England do it most often. Other sides playing the same game with same batch don't try it to that extent.
They keep doing it & damage its shape to get a different ball.

We are not complaining about ball changing . We are saying that England are getting completely new ball which isn’t fair for batting side . Imagine working hard to see off new ball only to face another new ball after 40 overs . This is completely unfair for batsmen.

Right, but this isn’t cheating is it, again this is on the umpire.

As it happens I was umpiring a game a few weeks ago where we’d lost a couple of balls so had to use a new rock about 30 overs in. The left arm spinner bowling at the time was fuming.

Bell even mentioned that the seam was messed up on the old ball!

Exactly, there’s a reason the umpire changes it!

It feels like they should at least have balls available from the same decade as the ball being replaced. i.e if the ball is 64 overs old then replace it with a 60 over old ball.

BMac also used to do it as captain when Wagner wasn't in the side and Boult and Southee weren't swinging it. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now as it is dishonest gamesmanship.
England used to do it a fair bit before he became coach.

Personally I'd restrict teams doing it, mostly to speed the game up, but as long as it's fine to do, good luck to England - long may they benefit.

I don't recall there being as much trouble doing this as there has been in England over the past couple of years.
