David Hussey? Picking 33 year old mediocre players was what got Australia in this mess in the first place. Australia needs to do some talent identification and pick some players who are going to be part of the picture long-term. That may not be Smith but it damn sure ain't Hussey.
Hussey may not be the future, but he's one of our best batsmen. Definitely deserved a go more than North.

If I remember correctly, North got in as an all-rounder (especially after getting 6 wickets in SA tour match). Hussey's bowling is nothing to speak about. Not to mention he has one of the worst technique's in Australia cricket (Smith & White being the others).

Well he is better than North or Smith as a number 6 bat against a good side. If you think either North or Smith are better now than Hussy then no wonder Australia are in such a mess.

All well and good picking for the future but when they are as poor as Smith then you just pick the best available team.
I reallly hated the persistence with North so we are in agreement there. You are probably right that Smith should not be picked as a batsman currently but David Hussey is just as bad a choice. I would rather take a shot with someone like Nick Maddison who has a chance of being a great player than getting guaranteed mediocrity.

Shakib is a superior limited overs bat to Test one, in a few years when he matures as a batsman the gulf may be closer.

Though by then Collingwood will probably have retired.

Agree totally, Rahim also is starting to mature as a bat. Amazing to consider he is only 22 when he has been around international cricket for so long.

I'd really only say Prasanna and Boucher (who is on a bit of a decline) are better international keepers than him, and I reckon he could prove to be a better bat than either in a few years time.

The really good keepers are almost never picked anymore because they usually are poor batsman. Haddin is not the best keeper in Australia but he is the best batsman among them and possibly in the best 6 batsmen in Australia.

What about Dhoni then?

Awta, his temperament is awful in tests atm.
