Even Bangladeshis would 'walk into' Australian team : Jamie Siddons

Hughes looks like the next Sinclair to me. I get those vibes watching him bat. Fantastic hand-eye to do what he does, but questions remain on whether his hand-eye alone is good enough to see him through.

Making long-term predictions about 22 year old Test batsmen is a fool's occupation. The vaaaast majority of players aren't anywhere near the Test team at this stage because they still have so far to go in their development. Whether or not he's good enough now (IMO he isn't), he's at a much more advanced level than where 90% of good Test batsmen were at his age. He could well make radical changes to his game over the next 3 years or so and he'll still be a young batsman. I'm not saying he's going to be gun, but I just don't see the point in trying to analyse his likely career path when he's 22.

He's 22, not 19. Yes he has a long way to go, but from what I can see, a strong eye won't make up for his poor technique. And even if he rectifies this, it may not make him a better player, as his strength won't be with him forever.

Haha I looked up the wrong Phil Hughes on cricinfo; how inconvenient. The crux of my point still stands though.

Hughes isn't 19, he's 20 odd isn't he?

Had a paragraph about changes and comparisons to Tamim, but then I got bored. From what I've seen so far, he gives me Skippy Sinclair vibes (with a worse technique), but if he makes changes then it's a clean slate.

Steve Smith though, needs to go work on his batting now. Pretty unfair to elevate him to a level above in the Ashes ahead of other candidates when he's not ready.

At best Hughes can hope to be the next Gambir. His 2 hundreds look flukey every passing day.

I think selectors should look at Mark Cosgrove seriously. Yes he is fat, but in tests, I think he's a safer option than the likes of Hughes and Smith. He is fitter than some of the subcontinental players regardless of his appearance.

Don't quite understand the hatred for Hughes. He did look bad in Perth but I thought he looked pretty good in Melbourne. Got out to an aggressive shot in the first innings and was run out by Watson in the second but I thought was actually looking quite good before being dismissed. He is always going to look bad when he gets out because his technique is unconventional. I think he is being judged on too few innings.

Anyway, Sydney may tell us more.

Mahmudullah honestly would probably be comparable to Smith or North.
Must admit i had a long think about him but i don't think North and Smith should be in the Aussie side and there are better players available in Australia than all of them. Dave Hussey cough cough.

Haha too right actually. A few Bangladeshis may get in the Australian side by the odd selection practices.

David Hussey? Picking 33 year old mediocre players was what got Australia in this mess in the first place. Australia needs to do some talent identification and pick some players who are going to be part of the picture long-term. That may not be Smith but it damn sure ain't Hussey.

Well he is better than North or Smith as a number 6 bat against a good side. If you think either North or Smith are better now than Hussy then no wonder Australia are in such a mess.

All well and good picking for the future but when they are as poor as Smith then you just pick the best available team.
