Can't say I know much about keeping but Bates is seriously impressive, and seems to be really highly rated by pretty much everyone as far as I can tell. Makes it even more anoying that he did not get much of a look in for Hants last year.

Yes heard really positive reports about his glovework, is there a considerable distance between his keeping and his batting ? I know he needed to work on his batting with Wheater getting the nod ahead of him due to his superior batting.

Oh yeah a big gap, not anywhere near and established county number 7 yet. He has shown some potential though, started 2012 very well and did ok at the back end of last year when he came into the side. If he does not get a run in the side this year than I would be looking for a new county if I was him, which would piss me off no end.

Would absolutely love it if we picked Foster.

Kerrigan is undoubtedly a better bowler than Ali too, as much as I love him.

I think England still need a good wicketkeeper who can bat as their current team still appears to have quite weak batting. I would play either prior or butler depending on form leading up to the series. I hope they select Ali and stokes as well.

Therefore there lineup may look a bit like this

1 cook c
2 Leading up to series best in form player current favourite is Robson
3 bell
4 once again in form player at time current leader Taylor
5 due to how he looked quite solid in the one dayers ballance
6 Ali
7 stokes
8 current favourite is butler wk
9 broad
10 Anderson
11 in form bowler at time again would have picked wood but not sure how serious his injury is. If it's serious onions

This team will have depth in batting and I believe another quality in the bowling for in English conditions to get the 20 wickets needed for victory against Sri Lanka

Pretty much exactly as I'm thinking. Would like to see Trott back and would bat Bell at 4 whatever though. I quite like the idea of Lees as opener for some reason. Compton should also be considered if he scores runs again.

Taylor, Morgan, probably the faves for those two middle-order spots, and Woakes is clearly putting forward a case in Sri Lanka ATM, he'd probably be batting at 9 in that type of line-up.

I hope Butler gets a decent period of time to play FC cricket for Lancs before he is thrust into the test team. Bairstow is another who hasn't been mentioned here (but given he is keeping in SL is obviously still in the mix) but needs to be given plenty of time at Yorks. Problem is we need a keeper now, so I am not averse to a stop gap solution. Always been a fan of Davies but he is seemingly a long way back now

I think Prior will be back. He just needs to prove he's in a better headspace, score some early-season county runs and hold his catches. He didn't take to vice-captaincy well and there was just no escape from the same opposition ten Tests in a row; a fresh start against a fresh team in home conditions should see him flourish again. He'll be in a clover by the end of the summer IMO.

That's utterly pathetic management from England.
Indeed, and explains why Finn, Tremlett and Rankin looked so utterly demotivated - still let's look on the bright side - with all that batting practice the dilemma over Cook's opening partner might have been solved

He's more used to number 3.

He was sent in as nwm at Sydney.

Anderson needs some treatment on his right hand which got smashed by Johnson. The way this tour has gone it's probably broken. Appears to be a problem with the left thumb nail, actually, and he gets some magic spray on it

I just wish he wouldn't try and play the short stuff with the handle of his bat. Just duck.

Maxwell signs for Hampshire for the T20 (and possibly other cricket during the time if Abbot is unavalable). Hampshire really making quite a few signings this winter. Blenkenstein came in as coach last week to join Will Smith, Coles, Gatting and Abbot. Should add strength to the squad even if Gatting and Smith aren't standout buys.

Was fun to watch the england u19s yesterday on the tv. Some thoughts on some of the players on what I saw yesterday and their county chances this season-

Finch looked decent in the limited time he was out there before playing inside a straight ball from the spinner. Struck the ball nicely and played some nice strokes. Might get a few first class games for sussex this season at 7 with a bit of his seam bowling and probably the occasional 50 over game

Tattersall scored 95 but doesn't look ready for county cricket. Needs to fill out physically a bit and looked a little short of quality. Was very sharp in the field and may play some games in T20/40 as primarily a fielder this year. Still looks to have a good head on him and will scrap for runs.

Rhodes will probably play a decent amount of 1 day cricket for Yorkshire. Bowling has developed a bit from last time I saw him and bowled good tight stuff at around 80mph and had some good use of slowerballs. Showed some nice glimpes of talent with the bat but will primarily play as a bowling allrounder for Yorkshire imo this season. Won't break into the first class stuff as Yorkshire are strong in that.

Really impressed by Joe Clarke behind the stumps. Kept very well to the spinners and just looked really natural. Is only 17 and still at school but wouldn't be surprised if he turns out for worcestershire come the end of the summer as there is only Cox ahead of him. Batting looked decent as well and looks a pleasant strokemaker if not particularly strong yet.

Bowlers weren't that impressive.

Fisher got some small swing throughout the innings and was around the 82mph mark which isn't bad considering he's only just 16 and still looks pretty slight. He does look a good prospect and will still be around for the next u19 world cup. Will probably get a game or two if Yorkshire aren't going to qualify for the 50 over kos.

Shaw,18, is more physically developed, looks strong and hits the wicket hard but tends to fire it down the leg side a bit too much. Also gave Samarawickrama a dickish sendoff after he got him out. Doubt he plays this season as he'd probably get hit all over the place in the one day stuff for yorkshire.

Didn't think much of Winslade. Bowled a good spell mid innings but looked pretty average and unlikely to improve too much as he looks physically developed. Reminded me of David Masters in his action. Can't see him playing anything more than a random one day game for surrey this season.

Sayer bowled accurately and did about as well as he could have on a wicket that was new and wasn't taking much spin for any of the spinners on either side. Didn't seem an outstanding option but was accurate and good decent bounce. May play some cricket for leics especially as he hits the ball nicely down the order but Naik and Sykes are ahead of him. I reckon he'll play some T20 and 50 over cricket.

Wouldn't say there are any outstanding players from this team unlike last time where there was Foakes, Overtons, and Topley. Sibley looks setup for the first class game but is quite underdeveloped for 50 over cricket at present. Clarke looked a very decent prospect and at only 17 has a long time to develop. Fisher another youngun who it's hard to predict how he'll end up but looks a potential star. Shaw is too erratic at present but could be a good fast medium bowler in time who runs in hard and hits the wicket.

Another chance to watch England tomorrow playing NZ. Must win game to get through to the quarters.

Was gonna give you a like for this post PEWS, right up until I read the last sentence. Gun post ruined by the worst idiom ever adopted by CW

So, Onions bowling well in the Loins match, the spinners all look pretty desperate figures-wise, they'll all get mullered by Lankan/Indians in the "Summer". It'd be th Oval repeated for poor ol' Kerrigan, or any of the others. Monty the only option if they go in with a specialist spinner, but I hope they don't.

Onions one of the few England players to have a good winter, him not playing in Australia has done him a lot of good because you doubt he would have gone well. As it is if he gets wickets at the start of the season (which he surley will) then you imagine he will play in the first test of the summer.

Would be very unlucky to miss out if he has another blistering start in the CC. Even if he becomes a more viable 'horses for courses' selection, it's probably the least he deserves after his continued excellence in the domestic game.
