As i mentioned earlier in this thread. Its Debatable TBF. Are we 100% sure he would have handled the pressure of the WC well?. Dont know. But given the SWP was shockingly picked with Walcott dropped - if Capello wanted a more experienced & seasoned premiership option - that was Ashley Young.Adam Johnson beats players as effortlessly as any player currently in world football not named Messi. Was a big miss for England at the World Cup.
Capello hardly ever used to call him up Youbg during WCQs between 2008-09/10. Plus the few tiems he did play i dont recall him every starting any game. So he was hardly given a change to prove himself on the international stage. But he was always a top performaer in the league on the wing. No, Ashley Young was not the option as he's shown next to nothing for England, less than SWP in fact.
From what little I've seen of him, Johnson looks a cut above the likes of Young, Downing, SWP, Lennon etc. and offers everything you'd expect from a top-level winger. He's no one-trick pony. Interesting to see if he can keep it going, though. As i mentioned earlier in this thread. Its Debatable TBF. Are we 100% sure he would have handled the pressure of the WC well?. Dont know. But thats all in the past. Johnson is a beauty & is a fixture now of course.
Which is still better than Young who'd never really looked good in an England shirt against any opposition, hence him not playing much.Capello hardly ever used to call him up Youbg during WCQs between 2008-09/10. So Capello's reason for leaving out Walcott. was because he didn't feel his form was right due to all the injuries (although i still would have picked him) & maybe wanted seasoned & in-form winger - Young was the best choice instead of SWP who was having real game time @ City nor ever looked good in an england shirt before againts good opposition.
He's only ever started one match. And he was hauled off after an hour.Which is still better than Young who'd never really looked good in an England shirt against any opposition, hence him not playing much.
Replaced by a debutant playing out of position who took his chance with both hands IIRC.He's only ever started one match. And he was hauled off after an hour.
Which match was this?Replaced by a debutant playing out of position who took his chance with both hands IIRC.
Indeed. Especially when he has looked international quality in the last two games he has played.Uppercut said:*shrug*
I'd much sooner play Milner than Young at the moment but I don't think it's fair to write off the latter's international career based on barely anything.
Haha.Which match was this?

Plus Milner would start in the best ENG XI ATM. Young is still very much a sub-player
As would any sane person, but 12-18 months ago how many people would've said that?*shrug*

Indeed he looked absolutely useless againts Hungary & Switzerland. SMHHaha.
Why are you talking about 12-18 months ago?. I thought we where talking about whether he should have gone to the WC as Walcott's replacement instead of SWP.marc71178 said:As would any sane person, but 12-18 months ago how many people would've said that?
And for the record I'm not writing off Young, just pointing out that he's done nothing at International level yet to justify being picked.

Better to go off domestic form no? Anyway last season he didn't deserve to go. If it was now he would be.As would any sane person, but 12-18 months ago how many people would've said that?

Joe Cole's claim for a spot is that he scored a cracking goal against Manchester United 5 years ago. Not exactly a strong case. Not better to go off domestic form if they've played a higher level IMO.
I would also question what has changed that would now make him a definite pick in a squad - could easily argue for Milner, Cole, Johnson, Walcott and Lennon to all have bigger claims for a spot than him and there's not many managers name 6 wingers in a 23.
