English national football, where do we go from here?

Why do Man U players often seem to retire/underperform for their countries? I guess it's all part of Fergie's scheme to get his players to give their best for their club but it means those players won't really be remembered among the very top names in world football no matter how many trophies they win at club level.

Have to say his Carrick ruse was a good one (although arguably better for England if it means he's not picked)

He might have made a few changes but the players he's brought in have precisely zero going for them other than the fact that they weren't involved in the World Cup shambles.

TBF he had loads of pressure. No pressure at Birmingham really for him. Worked for Hart.
Well that sounds promising for a future World Cup with nearly 1 billion people watching and an entire nation urging him not to drop a clanger :)

Sure it's linked to England but I was thinking more to him showing his abilities rather than being awesome internationally.

Was more to do with the fact that you seemed to be suggesting that performing well when the pressure is off is adequate criteria on which to base an assessement of a players general ability.

You suggesting Browns performed for us?
He was your first-choice right back when you won the League-CL double and a part of your success, I'd say. I was just making that statement as a general trend.. Scholes is another example and I've read that Giggs was not completely committed to his national team (though TBF, he would have struggled to take Wales to a major tournament in any case).

I love how everyone Capello's picked is retiring from internationals. Looking forward to the next England squad containing Joe Skarz of Bury.

Foster out with injury so Scott Loach and Frankie Fielding called up to the England squad

Honestly, ahead of Green, Carson, Turnbull, Kirkland and Almunia

Norwood's on Fire
Probably the same logic that saw Lewis called up a couple of years back, i.e. to gain some experience of being with the squad rather than with a view to actually playing.

Haven't read any reports on it though so I could be way off the mark.

For all that I've slated him yesterday, I'm actually coming round to the opinion that the FA could do a lot worse than court Martin O'Neill.

Timing isn't great for O'Neill, expect he'll be settling into a new job by the time Capello leaves.

Oh nah. Jus this might help him with being clear number 1 at Birmingham and not having the spectre of VDS.

Apparently for Fielding and Loach it's that they were close so they just got drafted in rather than ability. Already with the U21s so bumped up.
