English national football, where do we go from here?

Besides Scholes as a Deep lying playmaker would have allowed England to play the 433 Formation with A barry or Carrick behind him and released either of Lampard or Gerrard to get more forward.
Similar to Milan with Gattuso ,Pirlo and Kaka ,that would have given England more control over their possesion, not only possesion in terms of numbers.
Scholes would have also helped give the Midfield some bite ,and cover in deep positions which it lacked the whole tournament with Lampard and Barry.
That would have given England more tactical Flexibility and Meant that Rooney Played the role where he was succesful for United the previous season and would have meant no Heskey in the team.

Even at this age Scholes is England's best passer ,both short and specially Long and his long passes would have added to the penetration ability from deep, which England used aimlessly the whole tournament just aimlessly lumping it forward to Heskey. He would have also used his Long balls to make through passes not only on ground but also in the air accross to the wingers which would have given England more Width and More Penetration . This would have allowed the Fulbacks too concentrate on the defending too and not go forward to give width.

Are we all forgetting that Scholes is 35, can play less matches in a run than Ledley King and hasnt played at this level in god knows how long??

Great player at United, would've been a bad move for England. And a shocking kick in the teeth for team morale by Capello (more than Carragher, as he was in because of injuries and lack of options, not the case in midfield)

Of course in this WC, i don't think he would've been successful; But english are kinda delusional about stevie, lamps midfield combo and decided to give scholes a call a day before every tournament after realizing those 2 never gonna work together. Good on him though retired when he was on high..

In all fairness the damage was done when he asked Scholes to reconsider.

Reckon Scholes could have made England a much better side. Apart from Carrick, England don't have a passer near as good as him.

I agree with cpr though. It's not that people are overestimating how good a player Scholes is, because he's fantastic. But they're overestimating the impact he alone can have on a team at the age of 35. Even at United, his influence grows ever more limited with every passing year.

Paul Robinson: WAC. Being considered the third or fourth best English keeper offends your fragile little ego? HTFU.

Him being considered the third or fourth best keeper offends me tbf, though perhaps for different reasons than him!

Let's face it, all of our keepers are just a bit "meh" - can pick any of about 6 and you'd not really notice any difference between any of them.

I would agree that there are no outstanding candidates, but I would also say that the likes of Paul Robinson and Scott Carson are much more dubious than Joe Hart.

Was about to post that Cevno.

Good news for England anyway, now to get him transferred out of Old Trafford

Keepers always look better when they play for crap sides. It's why we've had the likes of Rob Green and Richard Wright elevated to international level. See also: Foster, Ben.
TBF he had loads of pressure. No pressure at Birmingham really for him. Worked for Hart.
