Agree Surrey and Lancs must be favourites for the titles.

The dry and sunny weather seen some big scores in the uni games and warmups. In 1 of the warmup friendlies, Warwicks smashed Northants for 504-0 off 90 overs, although 8 actually batted. poor scrimshaw went for 119 off 13 overs. In theory Notts have a strong bowling attack with Tongue, Stone and Pennington all available. Cors they could all be injured by next week. Prob why they signed Mo Abbas. And Kent were in trouble at 190-6 against the students until Evison and denly jnr added 325.

it's just brain dead - All England players could well do with a County Championship match under their belts. ECB are without logic and its just bizarre and sad.
It’s an absolute insult to county cricket. I’m sure most of us know the ECB don’t give much of a toss about it anyway, but it’s just rank incompetence to keep proving they don’t. Any organisation with the slightest bit of competence doesn’t make it so obvious.

How do people feel the season is going to go for their county? Or any other for that matter?

I’ve absorbed practically every piece of writing and every podcast that’s been put out on the start of the county season - unsurprisingly the BBC are the only ones who haven’t yet sorted theirs, which is a massive slap in the face to the excellent Kevin Howells, they consistently let him down and frankly, they don’t deserve him.

Anyway, I’m a Durham supporter, it seems the biggest question is ‘CAN SURREY BE STOPPED’ and if so, by whom?! I’d love to say by us, a few people have been kind enough to tip us, but I have to say that the bowling depth concerns me. Last year we had the lowest number of bowling bonus points in the Division, the problem we have isn’t talent (or a lack thereof), it’s dealing with international call ups and injuries. In a perfect world (which, of course, we don’t live in) we could field a four man pace attack of Test players - Wood, Potts, Carse and Stokes. Unfortunately for us, the concern will be that we won’t see much of any of them. As far as I’m aware only Potts will be available for the first half of the season, we may see Stokes playing later in April or May, but I suspect it’ll be a a batsman only. Ben Raine continues to perform admirably in filling the role left by Chris Rushworth, I look forward to seeing how Doggett (sp?) performs when he arrives for the Warwickshire game next week, but aside from that there’s a lot of youth and inexperience. Players like Minto, Hogg, McAlindon and Killeen all have bags of promise and potential, Minto and Hogg have also received praise nationally from the media, but it would be unwise to place too much expectation on them as they learn their trade. I expect the occasional seam of Will Rhodes will be heavily relied upon, as will the spin of Parkinson and possibly even Ackermann in terms of finding people to give the quicks a rest in the middle of the afternoon. A pacer that does have experience and capability is Paul Coughlin, but he continues to be MIA too regularly for him to be considered a serious contender for making a telling contribution - which is a shame, because I genuinely believe that when fit he’s as good a genuine all-rounder as any in county cricket.

Batting wise we may have the strongest lineup in the country, the hardest task for Ryan Campbell will be putting together the best combination and then keeping happy the lads he can’t find a place for. We’re likely to see the order in the first month or so of the season with something like: Lees, McKinney, Gay, Bedingham (although not at Trent Bridge), Rhodes, Ackermann, Robinson.

Bedingham might want to go 5, Rhodes and Robinson have both batted higher than I have them, the latter especially could be interesting, he was magnificent at 5/6 in our Division Two title winning season, but struggled a bit at times last year, perhaps filling the more traditional keeper/batsman 7 slot will suit his game much more, along the Adam Gilchrist lines.

Much has already been written of McKinney’s promise, I think it’s a big year for him, my main concern is that he’ll fall into the Zak Crawley trap of looking a million dollars for the first few overs but suddenly finding a way to throw it away. The key for him will be finding the right gear and giving himself a chance.

On top of all that, we boast four bowlers (I think it’s four) who have FC hundreds to their name. Raine, Carse, Potts & Coughlin, so if the top order don’t get the job done, the lads down at the bottom might just keep us competitive.

I’m excited for the season as always, but I think this year may see us in something of a holding pattern, we’re heading in the right direction and for those of us who enjoyed the three title wins only to have to endure the possibility that we’d cease to exist - I’m hungry for more success, but patient enough that I’m simply enjoying the ride for the time being. I feel like this squad and the coaching staff have the ability to win it, but that they’re not quite there just yet. Would love to be proved wrong come September.

Hope you’ve enjoyed it if you’ve got this far. Apologies if it’s given you a headache.

Ha’way Durham!

One for the Lancashire fans (and maybe Bazball enthuiasts) - Is Tom Hartley's fall from grace complete or an oversight? (He wasn't in the Team Photo from this week's Media Day https://x.com/BBCLancsCricket/status/1906984737362563438) text below unedited from the LCCC website

Squad to face Middlesex:

Keaton Jennings (c), Tom Aspinwall, Tom Bailey, George Balderson, Charlie Barnard, George Bell, Jack Blatherwick, Josh Bohannon, Marcus Harris, Matty Hurst, Michael Jones, Ollie Sutton, Luke Wells, Will Williams

Rothesay County Championship - player availability update:

Saqib Mahmood is available for the Rothesay County Championship, and has options included in his new contract for red ball cricket with Lancashire. He is currently building up his workloads ahead of a return to four-day action.

Due to white ball commitments, including the upcoming Pakistan Super League, Luke Wood is highly unlikely to be available for selection in this season’s Rothesay County Championship. Wood will be available for Lancashire Lightning for the full duration of the Vitality Blast.

England centrally contracted players Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt are unlikely to feature for Lancashire in the Rothesay County Championship this season, due to a combination of the Indian Premier League and England white-ball commitments throughout the summer.

All other contracted squad members remain available for selection for Lancashire in the Rothesay County Championship.

I think Essex might struggle this year. Looks like they’re leaning heavily on internal player development and whilst there seem some exciting prospects in there, I feel first team opportunities are going to come too soon. The depth in the event of an injury or two will be severely tested.

Another blow to England’s fast bowling stocks: Olly Stone “ruled out for 14 weeks” - ie the Test summer - following knee surgery. Poor fella can’t catch a break

I would expect that captains winning the toss will bowl first...
Jennings is bowling first.

Crawley carrying on his SA20 form, out for 1.

Livingstone & Salt being unavailable for the Championship is a plus for Lancs I think.
