English Domestic Season 2023

Yeah, it was always possible. Which is why I felt that the assumptions that they would coast to a couple of batting points was insufficiently respectful to Hampshire's bowling and rather over-respectful to Surrey's recent batting. Beyond that, I can only echo other people's sentiments about the Jacks/Lawes replacement (if TL was injured, surely Atkinson was the like-for-like substitute) and that Dawson really should be on the flight to India.
The nomination of who to replace someone by has to be done in advance of the game. Lawes was not replaced due to an injury unless he carried that injury into the game and Surrey thought he could manage one day.
Either way the talk of tactics of when to use to the replacement and of it being optional is alarming.
And no talk of the replacement having to be like for like (unlike for concussion).

Could they not just have scheduled the games to start a day later? Feels like a simple solution to the problem

Or even given the second ODI was on Saturday, they could have played the final Ireland game on Monday.
Far too simple for the ECB.
Of course they may have an alternative agenda of allowing cricket to become ***ier, sorry more like football and therefore more understandable, by allowing substitutes all the time. Spinners not needed in the first half of a game in April or May, no problem, so just sub them in if you feel like it for the last two days.

I have come round to this idea in recent years however to avoid abuses there would have to be an independent medial assessment and the replaced player would have to face a lay-off period of, say, a couple of weeks to ensure that it was only used for genuine injuries.

The Jacks/Lawes substitution is absolutely shocking IMO. Not that it'll affect the outcome of the championship, but they can hardly be considered like for like. (Also I don't really understand why Surrey would sub out their best bowler, but there you go.)
Agree. He takes a 5fer and subbed. One of the other bowlers should have replaced Jacks.
At Lancs the main bowler Williams (ave 21.66) to be subbed out for Hartley. It should have been Blatherwick (42.16).
Williams econ 2.17. Blatherwick econ 5.72 who bowled two high full tosses and can't bowl again this innings.

I think the guys playing the Ireland series should have just missed this round of games. But the better option would've just been to avoid any overlap. Zak Crawley magically got injured, though it's likely he'd have come in for Compton, so maybe it was for the best. It just feels like it devalues the game if you can just sub guys coming back from England duty in.

Aside from concussion subs - which are almost common these days - what used to happen, how many times did they used to play on! Crawley is in effect the first player listed (in a 12) at the toss for the second half of a match to be replaced for illness. Given Compton's performance it is no surprise that his withdrawal is questioned. Precautionary?

Hartley today may become the first optionable sub not to be included? Given the lack of wicket taking bowling available to Lancs in the current innings Kent could easily add 200 or more and Lancs fold on day four. They may opt to keep William's on the field. If Bailey is limping why not replace him?

If subs are going to be part of cricket, there should be more transparency. Nobody knows or nobody is prepared to say what's going on at Canterbury, and why Jacks was the exception and allowed to play on day two for Surrey.

Surrey's go-slow in this match is surprising and disappointing IMO. They have an entire middle order full of exciting attacking batters, you'd hope they would have tried to get some bonus points and win the championship that way instead of plodding to a bore draw.

If only Northants could have found this form earlier in the season.
Making Surrey follow on last week, and today doing likewise with Essex.
They really kept the destination of the title down to the second last day thanks to their efforts.

Interesting to see if they can bounce straight back up in 2024.

Chapple (officially) steps down as Lancashire coach.

The club is now looking for a new head coach for both the men and the women's sides.

Surprised me too, though seemingly not Third Man. Thought that Lancashire’s performance in recent seasons had been decent.

all this points and bonus points incomprehensible nonsense.. Let the top 2 counties play a four match championship series. cover it like test cricket. That will drive up interest

Strong rumours behind why Parkinson left being due to dressing room problems. Body language of team was not clever at the start of the Blast to back this up. Results not brilliant 2nd in championship and finals for both Blast and One Day cup last year. Success would have gone some way to address off field rumours. Bizarre team selections highlighted by picking Lamb back in July, after he had been released just days after DoCP had announced selection would be based solely on who would be around next year, Lamb wasn't even in the squad - there were other options, practically anyone could have been driven down the M6 to Birmingham.
