English Domestic Season 2011

Interestingly (or not as the case may be) not one batsman managed a century today, despite nine batsmen going past 50 (as well as a couple of 49's). Several batsmen got a start today but none have gone on and really made the opposition pay, it is a change from the normal early season games in that the batsmen are enjoying themselves more than usual at this stage of the year.

It is reflected in the state of the matches after day one. The batting sides will generally feel they've had a decent day (only Glamorgan were bowled out) but none of them have assumed complete control and the bowling sides will be confident a few quick wickets tomorrow will leave the games wide open. So can a batsman on day two put his side in total control ? My money may have been on Alistair Cook had he not fallen in the dying stages of today, so to make a big score tomorrow I'm putting my neck on the line and going for Martin van Jaarsveld for Kent against Gloucester. Also keeping my fingers crossed for Ravi Bopara enjoying the Chelmsford delights.

The 22 year old from Oldham and the 22 year old from Bolton have now put on 50 for Lancs 6th wicket. Encouraging stuff for Lancs members I guess.

No idea but I'll be pleased to get Sussex out of the way before your batsmen hit form, as they inevitably will, but not this month hopefully

Came in at an important time aswell, Worcester were wobbling at 101-4 when he made his way to the crease, and has so far faced 228 balls for his 70 not out, so displaying good patience.

Somerset really do look out of sorts with Hants off to an excellent start

But to return to more important matters I'm delighted to see more of Lanky's young batsmen scoring runs, though it increasingly looks like we may have had a bit of luck with the fixtures - not sure we'll look so good against Warwickshire next week

Mendis is suffering from a slight back strain I believe, and Lewis Gregory, who was due to replace also has a niggle. Young Alex Barrow has been selected to strengthen the batting and make his debut in the process.

Yes Adams and Dawson once again getting Hants off to a decent start.

Playing Sussex twice in the early stages may be an advantage as they are probably going to be one of the weaker sides in the top division. Somerset will only improve as the season goes on, don't think it was fortune for Lancs in playing them, just that they played exceptionally well and prayed on the pressure Somerset are feeling.

Gareth Cross has had an excellent start, and for Luke Procter to come into the side and make 89 in only his third first-class game must only add to the confidence Lancs will have in the growing strength in depth in this tiny squad.

Essex making typical heavy weather in surpassing Glamorgan's modest total of 282 (although they should not have been allowed to make so many). Four players already going past 20 and not pushing on. Bopara made 61 which is encouraging for him to get some ruins under his belt, but a three figured score would have put us in a much healthier position in this game. Currently 189-6 with Pettini and Foster at the crease, a lead of some fashion is vital.
