As it appears are Durham than Yorkshire!

2 wins in 2, is that a new county record?

(hurriedly goes back and reads what he wrote in the match summary)

Kevin Innes strides to the wicket at Tunbridge Wells, knowing full well that James Kirtley is hurtling down the M1 as we speak.

Is he the nominated sub for Sussex today? Will lightning strike twice?

Did Worcestershire score 500 in a day yesterday? :O How on Earth? That's well impressive.....is that near the record?

On T.M.S. today it said that it was Hutchison was moonlighting as James Kirtley...............it's like Stars In Your Eyes :D

Doubt it, as Lara hit 390* in a day himself...

Wisden doesn't have the team records in (or that I can find, anyway)...

I seem to recall that Australia once hit 720 odd in a day in England back in the 1950's

or before. Read it somewhere, anyway

I find it interesting that when Chris Cairns was in Sri Lanka playing for NZ he couldn't find the middle of the bat once and rarely got past 10 runs in 5 matches.

Now he's back at Notts and has scored 2 half centuries & a century in 3 FC matches in quick time.
That to me shows that the level of competition in county cricket is not really of a very high standard at all.

To be fair I would suggest it is more indicative of the pitch/conditions. If it was the standard, then Cairns and the overseas players would be racking them up while English players struggled, but if we look at a brief summary of that match:

Warks 351 (Trott 63, Wagh 58, Obuya 55)
Notts 646 (Pieterson 221, Cairns 104, Welton 99, Afzaal 72, Franks 62*)
Warks 138-1 (Knight 85*).

So as you can see 1035 runs divided by 21 wickets = an average of 50 runs per wicket, which is quite alot! Plenty of batsmen in the runs there, and dare I say it Cairns is not exactly a world class batsman, as suggested by his FC average of 35 and test average of 32.

RE PY's question, I can tell you that most runs in a day of a TEST MATCH by a single team is 509-9 (Sri Lanka v Bangladesh, Colombo, 2002), and by both teams is 588-6 (England (398-6) v India (190-0), Manchester, 1936)!

Doubt the info will be available for FC, but suggest it will be significantly higher than 600.

ANd you hit the nail on the head..Cairns is not a world class batsman because he's never consistent enough. So when he goes back to English County Cricket & racks up big scores consistently it does raise a few eyebrows.

Yes Cairns has been running riot:

v Warks - 44 & 7
v Lancs - 57
(missed two games)
v Essex - 1 & 39
v Warks - 104

So I make that 252 runs in 6 innings at 42. First of all he's hardly tearing the place up, and secondly you seem to have overlooked my point that plenty of players have had more success.

Well for a player who's not considered to be a World Class batsman, he's really more of a bowler who can bat but thats changed in recent times..an average of 42 is pretty good IMO.

Bazza

International 12th Man
Not bad but his FC average is 35 and he has played most of his cricket in NZ where it is very hard to make runs, so not much different really.

It is pretty good, but you've got to take into the account that Cairns has rarely played First class cricket in the last 3 or 4 years due to injury or being away with NZ.
It has also only been in recent times that the standard in NZ first class cricket has been improved greatly.
About 5 or 6 years ago, there was no base of players & quite a number of players would have been lucky to make a top Australia club side.

Im not suggesting that Cairns is ordinary because at times he can be sensational with the bat..but for the bulk of his FC career he played when the standard in NZ cricket was woeful to say the least.

What about Mike Hussey's 265.

Huss would have more than 3000 county championship runs under his belt now at an avrage above 70 I beleve.

I think he has made 2 Triple hundreds and 3-4 doubles over there as well.

Are they Tripe hundreds because the bowling was really poor? ;)
I dont really know how good the attacks of the respective teams he made 300s against are.

Why ask me you know more about county cricket than I do.

I think he was referring to your use of 'tripe' instead of 'triple'.
