England tour of Australia ODIs

Smith 3 Marnus 4 is fine in ODs especially when the next wc is in India. There is still room for middle order accumulation vs spin. Green, Carey, Maxwell to follow isn't bad either. I think it's alright with the batting side of things atleast

Marnus's ODI numbers are pretty underwhelming and his domestic record isn't much better, also did horribly in sri-lanka/pakistan ODI's, which isn't a good sign for india. Hard to get rid of him a year out from a WC, but would prefer any of handscomb, renshaw, inglis or even green at 4 long term. There's also the issue of a lack of explosive batsmen in the lineup with maxwell and warner being on their last legs, head is decent but a top 5/6 of

2.Mcdermott
3.Smith
4.Marnus
5.Carey
6.Green

Doesn't strike me as the kind of lineup that's gonna set the kind of targets we need to win consistently.

I think the ODI side is fine tbh, they wiped the floor with NZ a month ago and with Finch gone they'll look a lot stronger

We do have a incumbency problem though. In that once you're "in" it's very hard to get out and quality players like Abbott just can't get a look in. Stoinis has been stuck with for way too long

Why isn’t Handscomb in the reckoning for these squads? When Smith was away for being naughty he was the one Aussie batsman I was particularly impressed with. Seemed to have a pulse on the ODI game, played spin well and rotated strike well too. Since Smith came back I’ve never seen him in the Aussie team. At least he has good experience in India

Not a bad call. I was very surprised with how well Handscomb did in those ODIs as well but he doesn't seem to be in the reckoning atm. Would be a fine player to have around 4 or 5 for a World Cup in India.
