I don`t think so. No way... Aussie dominance.
Aussie arrogance rather. I don't consider the Australian 2nd XI to be that amazing. Decent batting, but the bowling doesn't much impress me.

You're kidding - and I say that as a Surrey supporter. He can play a bit, but he's far too loose even for the county game, so I dread to think what test attacks would do with him. Last year he faded badly after a decent start to the season, and he did next to nothing for the A team a year and a bit ago IIRC.
He still has 3-4 years to change that too. He can only hope that he'll still have the advantage of playing for Surrey then.

Whom would you select in an England second XI right now?

Amazing this question can be asked considering England was struggling to play a proper first XI a few years ago..

So who would play in your second England XI apart from Stuart Law ;)
how about a thread each for the other 9 teams second X1 as well :)

Surely there are better bowlers in England than Anderson and Kabir Ali and better players than Batty and Clarke.

are there? someone picked a bowling attack that looked like that, and some of those players-anderson and ali in particular made almost every side.

Cus he can bat a little bit, the only reason why he made England squad cus they couldn't find Fast Bowlers who could bat so they picked someone like him.
and they needed a spinner for the tour of sri lanka

I'd move Vaughan to 3 and have Pietersen at 4.

And I'd have Prior at 7.

My Second XI:

Bell
Key
Law
Pietersen
Blackwell
Collingwood
Read
Sajid Mahmood
Gough
Saggers
Anderson
Jefferson
Newman
Butcher
Bell
Collingwood
Clarke
G Jones
G Swann
Tremlett
Mahmood
Anderson

I'd expect Cook to overtake Newman before the season's out, though.

Cheers,

Mike

S MacGill

That side or some slightly variations to it would be pretty hard to beat.
It looked good until you look at the bowling line-up. 3 frontline bowlers, 2 of which are mediocre and 1 unproven, backed up by tripe.

Well as i said you could change the side slightly if you want, you could bring in a 4th bowler in Bichel, Braken, Wright or Lewis all a lot better then the guys in the England 2nd XI side, apart from maybe Anderson but his aswell mediorce at best. Compare that bowling attack to any of the England 2nd XI bowling attack they would win hands down. They may not be world beaters on the international stage but their isn't a better 2nd XI bowling attack going around. If you think there is one put one, cus im sure you wont find one.

Swann has been getting good reports from what I hear, and if they really rated Batty, he'd have been put on that tour of SL.
I'm just trying to remember the timing of the SL tour in relation to the ODI's in SA. Was Batty in the test squad too? If so, maybe they reckoned he needed some time at home before the new season.

That being said, I'm not sure that the pecking order for the reserve offies is as definite as for the batsmen and quicks. I think you're right that Swann's stock has raised somewhat, so my take on the position is that he & Batty are neck & neck, and whoever performs this year will get the nod if needed.

Bowling stength? MacGill, Lee, Bracken, Lewis, Wright, Nicholson, Bichel, Tait, Harvey. Any four would easily beat four second-string english bowlers.

Im shocked Harvey infront of Stuart Clark :-O , interesting the lack of spinners in the top Australia bowlers.

No mentions of scott newman eh. he is trescothicks replacement when he retires in 3/4 years time
hooray!!! Another Scott Newman fan, there are two of us after all.

By the way everybody, Bell will not be in the 2nd XI, he will definitely feature in The Ashes.
