England players and selection discussion thread

SeamUp

International Coach
England may have been forced to go with their test team how it is because of a lack of quality specialists.

But this happening now in West Indies should be another eye opener that things need changing and if they want to get back to number 1 in the world they going to have to change things drastically in my opinion because this team is always open to things like this and Australia away.

Change coach. Give more defined roles. I mean every tom, dick and harry has had a go at the #3 spot. What ever sticks at the moment gets it attitude without thinking longevity in a role or position.

Yep agree with most of that SeamUp. I actually forgot that Bayliss is still the coach tbh. There is some talent in this team, but a coach has to be ruthless at times and Bayliss is just not that personality.

I think Bairstow at 3 will be really good long-term, but it's time for the main young talent in FC cricket to be given a chance (Lawrence, Livingstone, Clarke and maybe Sam Hain)

I don't understand the obsession with Rashid in test cricket. He's worse than Bishoo and that's saying something. Leach is so much better.

Impressed with Burns though. You can tell he has played a lot of matches and knows his technique even if it's not pretty. That's the sort of opener every team needs. I think he might make it.

Jennings however, looks very awkward against pace. They front leg just doesn't bend at all.

Thing is if you made a list of the 6 best batsman in county cricket then 3 of our top 6 would be in there.
Burns Bairstow root undoubtedly. Buttler doesn't play for lancs but was a wild card call up and has justified his selection and I believe should be 5, and Stokes needs to be our genuine all roundder at 6.
That only leaves Jennings who I've never liked in the team and should be replaced. Who with i don't know. It's a shame that our only performing batsman for the lions is another keeper/batsman lol

The first 2 points are bang on.

As for new coach I hope it is Silverwood but we will wait and see on that.

Hain, Lawrence, Clarke, Livingstone they are all kinda middle order bats. Pope too. There are only really top order spots going. Pope debuted at 4 having batted almost exclusively at 6 for Surrey, which was unfair. It isn't easy for them to blood a guy at 5 or 6 because they have so many options for those spots. Bairstow best spot is 7. Stokes 6. Ali 7. Hmm even Root would probably prefer to bat 5. Curran 8. Woakes 8. FOakes 7. Pope 6. Buttler 6.

Bayliss should have gone a year ago from the test job, but it's too late now with the WC and ashes coming up. TBF results have picked up in the last couple of series, even if the actual series scores were a little flattering(4-1 india, 3-0 sl)

Bairstow's output without gloves is dipping which is a bit baffling. Averaging mid-30's for a No. 3 is not really what you want.

Okay here is what I think a post-Jimmy/Broad team should compromise (in English conditions)

Burns, Gubbins, Bairstow, Root, Clarke, Woakes, Foakes, Stokes, Curran, Leach, Stone

Other players around the team: Livingstone, Lawrence, Virdi, TRJ/C Overton/Tongue

Personally I don't see Woakes at 6 as a realistic option.
Ali, Woakes, Foakes, Curran. They score runs at 8 or 7 and then you hear people talking about how they could bat higher.
The fact is it's much easier batting at 8 as opposed to 5 or 6- and it's completely different psychologically. You've gotta be very sure of their game to promote them. IMO it would just be another failed attempt like Ali.

He's simply more suited to batting lower down, but unfortunately so is everyone else. Nothing baffling abut it.

Put Bairstow at 5 and Buttler at 7 and you need a 2 and 3.
I don't think Bairstow is better up the order, he is too reckless. He has 3 100s at 7. I like all wicket-keepers to bat at 7 :) eg Pant at 7, 51.10 (2 100s v Eng, Aus in 9 Tests - de Kock 48.34, 4 100s at 7)
In ODIs Bairstow is top class opening the batting.

You could definitely be right. Right now I see Woakes as a bit of an unfulfilled talent, but that's maybe because I have high expectations of him.

He should be in the XI for SA at the end of the year. Ideal conditions for his bowling and he has a solid defensive game to bat 6-8

After Anderson goes, hopefully with 600 wickets, I see Broad, Archer, Stone and Stokes. Injury replacements being Roland-Jones,Tongue, Brookes.
Broad is only 32 and has at least 3 years.

Stone won;t play test cricket. He can't keep himself fit, will end up being a white ball specalist....i really hope Archer stays grounded and wants to play red ball cricket
