DoG's Top 100 Test Bowlers Countdown Thread 100-1

Statistical beast.

Top 4 strike rates didn't have proper careers.
Trueman held the world record on wickets despite missing a ton of games over politics.
He's statistically light years ahead of any quick to have played before or for a long time after him.

He didn't play a lot away though. I suppose that's partly due to politics.
And not so good away. Not a perfect record, but you have to look at the 80s bowlers to find one less flawed. Standout quick of the first 100 years of cricket is a pretty good recommendation.

I typically put Trueman ahead of Donald, Imran, Waqar and Killed among the bowlers yet to appear.

wpm seem on the lower side
For some reason, he bowled many overs less than the other bowlers. And of course, there was lots of wickets sharing when playing with the bowlers he did.

For example, he bowled just 13 overs across 2 full innings in a supertest against WSC Australia (9 in the first, 4 in the second). Took 1 wicket in the first.

When did his knees go?

E: Just reading an interview, sad that he had knee issues during the 2nd season, and actually bowled spin at times.

Australia's greatest bowler before the second-world war, "Tiger" O'Reilly excelled against the only quality opposition of his era, taking 102 wickets in 19 matches against England between 1932 and 1938. He was also superb away from home, with only Lohmann and Barnes having better records. O'Reilly finished ahead of his great partner-in-crime Grimmett not only due to his stronger record against England but mainly because he gained massive career length points by playing a solitary match against New Zealand after the war where he took 8/33. Without this match he would have finished on 802 points, only good enough for 26th position. But there cannot be much doubt that Tiger would have taken a great deal more wickets without conflict once again breaking out in Europe.

He's a shade lower than I thought he'd be. Nevertheless he's the kind of bowler that doesn't come around all that often. When Bradman rates you as the best he's ever faced you know you're pretty damn good.
