We can agree to disagree.

I'm not even counting longevity, but to quote a popular refrain, availability is the most important ability. Durability is very much a part of that.

Steyn and McGrath did have flatter conditions to contend with and the pitches these days are way more result focused than even the pitches of the 80's.

I already responded to the better part in another post, and again we're free to disagree. But it sounds like you believe that he's already in the conversation to be the best bowler ever, I don't think he's quite there.
Why did you just quote my post and say the same thing I said in more words ffs.

And no I don't think he's in the argument for best ever, obviously. Won't even put him top 15. Was specifically responding to the "at their best" argument. I genuinely think in that criteria he's not far off if at all. But maintaining that over a long time is what I value a lot and he'll probably never get there.

Not Terrible
Why did they make Graeme Smith the captain?

Shaun Pollock as captain 14-5-7 (not atg but still SA were definitely second best in the world at that point), they didn’t beat Australia in that period and drew a series with SL but won every other series.

Pollock as captain:

26 matches 998 runs @ 41.58 2 tons 103 @ 21.36 4 5’fers 22 catches

coincidence that Pollock’s decline began after this????

Big anti Pollock conspiracy
Some players individually perform better with the added responsibility of captaincy but are below average with the actual tactics and team management side of things. (Ross Taylor :()

You are missing the point. Folks like you are why Pollock is underrated. To quote yourself:
Yes, I just said that. He was the 2nd guy. Donald was better.

He's also, like Garner for me, an ATG. In context to the guys like Ambrose or Donald, I'm choosing them all day. Depends on the context of the argument.

I wasn't referencing "greatest" either but purely who was better.

And at their best, I'll still take Marshall and McGrath for effectiveness and skill, and Hadlee for being able to shoulder the burden.

More arguable but, Ambrose and Steyn for destructive ability.

And note, that's literally like 5 people all time.

Like you, in terns of greatness I have him in the back half of the top 20.
