It’d be interesting to get stats on tailenders who had lower batting averages but faced the most balls per innings.

Just being able to hang around is valuable. I know Gillespie made that 200 but I always admired his ability to stick for ages even when not scoring, in order to build partnerships.

Just from memory the one player who really stood out in this area to me was Saqlain Mushtaq. On average he faced 46 balls per innings with a batting average of 14.48

Gillespie on average faced 41 balls per innings. For reference Vettori faced on average 45 balls.

This needs to be contexualised though, even as a tail ender. If you are batting 11, a SR of close to zero would be great. If you are batting 8, a SR close to zero while you are batting with a recognised bat is good, but if you have 3 Martin's below you, you need to start hitting out when the specialist goes.

You can also add nightwatchman duties which this type of tail ender is perfect for.

Nah, I don't think so, by this logic specialists are always inferior to all rounders.

Yeah I get the joke, it just (to me anyway) doesn't really work because the only England spinners I can recall over the last 20-30 years who were any good at batting were Swann (who would have got in the team as a bowler alone anyway) and Giles. Most of the rest that I recall (e.g., Tufnell, Leach and Panesar) have been basically useless with the bat.
