Dhoni easily. Outperformed every late middle order batsmen in entire ODI history. Gilly has tough challenge as the best ODI opener (Tendulkar, Anwar, Ganguly), or as all rounder who opens (Jayasuriya, Gayle, Watson).
That is because most decent batsmen don't bat in the lower middle order. And Bevan outperformed Dhoni anyway.

Don't agree. That's because most of so called good batsmen are appalling when it comes to batting at 6 and 7. And Bevan has not out performed Dhoni as well.

Is Dhoni as far ahead of Gilchrist as his average suggests? Absolutely, if all else equal (batting position has nothing to do with it ). Is Dhoni better than Tendulkar ? If he keeps going for sane length of time as Tendulkar has, why not?
Bigger (and more relevant) question would be if Dhoni were better than Viv.

If he keeps going for another 6-7 years like this and doesn't have a big hole in his record, why not? Those are big ifs though.

Completely different players ffs. It's like asking who is better out of McGrath and Murali. Sure they both bowl, but they do it at different times, in different ways and fulfill different roles entirely.

The comparison arises from the fact that they are both contenders for wicket keeper's position in an all time XI. That should have been easy to understand. There is a reason why there is no thread for Dhoni vs Jayasuriya.

Well, I see a separate thread and poll has been opened to answer the Bevan question. One thing I think is forgotten here is the quality of the bowling that Bevan faced for most of his career.

I am not even sure I take Dhoni over Michael Hussey who has a very similar record. And are you calling Tendulkar or Ponting, say, a "so called good batsman" because they did not bat at 6. Pretty sure they were pretty good finishers when called on to do it.

Easy one then, There are better openers than Gilchrist but not many good finishers than Dhoni.

Dhoni.

Dhoni is a contender for best ODI batsman ever along with Bevan, Viv, SRT. Gilchrist doesn't even come in the top 10.

It's an odious comparison though. If that's the case pick them on their keeping abilities.

They're both fine exponents in their respective batting positions, but there are others in contentions in both roles. Gilchrist was a better keeper than Dhoni though.
