Sorry there's been few updates recently - my PC's in dire need of some new bits (on account of the fact that if it crashes again I'm going to hit it with a hammer).

Normal service will be resumed within a week

PC fixed - normal misservice has now been resumed.

It'll take me 2 or 3 days to catch up because there's been enough rubbish going around of late to keep even the duck happy.

I do like Simon Taufel's cowboy hat.

Sorry could be my mistake, I've just never met a man named 'Lynn'!

As for the umpire referred to above, well it's the one who doesn't know what a wide is.....
Lyn Davies - former Olympic long-jump record holder (fails to choke back desire to say 17 hours and 23 minutes) is the only male 'Lyn' or 'Lynn' I've ever heard of.

Ah well. If he/she's a bloke she/he has my apologies

Latest 'Clarkewatch' figures posted - see front page DD column (I've just appended it at the end of the 'news' I posted yesterday)

His umpiring hat just looks a little wider in the brim than most.

Perhaps it's a new ICC issue, of course, but it did remind me of the one John Wayne wore in 'True Grit' (apart from the size, the colour, the shape, the way he was wearing it and, of course, the absence of the eyepatch).

First impressions of Simon's umpiring in the UK - very studious, no fuss, no gimmicks, just gets on with it (quite unusual nowadays).

No it's actually very animated, just umpiring with Billy Bowden makes anyone look normal

The first thing he (Simon) told us at training was to use the KISS principale when signalling (Keep It Simple Stupid).

I know he has had a few games with Billy....Wonder what he thinks of the way he signals....??

BTW: Of course his hat will be wider than most....he spends most of his days out in the middle during the Aussie summer!!

Corks, of course.

THAT's what's missing!

That's what I'm loking forward to seeing. When BB's pulling some gymnastic combination of, er, signals (for want of a better word), the cameras ought to pan round to Simon. I bet he's covering his mouth trying not to laugh.

I have all his games at the WC on video and there was one game where the both of them were umpiring (Can't remember which game it was though)

Billy was signalling 4 and the camera panned around to Simon who was grinning broadly and trying to cover up his laughter by coughing!

Ohhh Simon...

I thought he knew what a wide is pretty well...:D
Is that why he missed three in the washed out England v Zimbabwe game last week and was very leniant again last night?

That doesn't matter one iota as long as he is consistent - and he certainly seems to be. A wide is a judgement call as far as an umpire is concerned. When you get called for delivering a ball 18 inches outside off stump, it's becoming too much of a batsman's game I reckon.

True but these were wides that any other umpire would call in a one day game. The rules are there and the standard has been set to follow. Batsmen leave these balls expecting a free run and instead get nothing. If bowlers were sticking five balls an over out there where you can barely reach it there would soon be uproar. Anyway it's alright for Taufel to be consistent, but if that is contrary to every other umpire then that is not consistency.
