Nah, SA weren't really a threat to that quality of Australia at any point during McGrath's career. I'd give the slight advantage to the on the wane Aus in this comparison, actually.
They might have been on par with Australia in the early part of McGrath's career but definitely not in the 00s

Not better, not even a justification for McG, but Steyn did play almost his entire career against an Aus on the wane/mend while McGrath had to cope with a slightly more doughty/resurgent SA team.
Nah we arent talking mid 80s level quality here. They still had Clarke who was the best bat in the world in early 2010s and Hussey. Warner at home was a handful.

SA in the 90s was a good lineup but not notably better.

Also in the MCG test, Ponting scored a hundred in both innings and still Steyn won them the match

Whatever it takes!!!
I hope not. The team's playing much better now that he is out.
Its also kinda scary how much Rameez is jerking off to Babar there. Starting to think he really wanted Babar to score hundreds as a priority over even Pak winning any cricket games. Might be the old "better than India, we have one better than Virat" thingy or maybe just an actual idiotic man crush, dunno. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Babar is best at politics. Batting seems to be secondary. I hope he stays out for longer.

For the people saying Steyn's ER was bad, are you complaining that his average was too high or that he strikes too fast? That's how the maths of ER goes.

Unless you think he got hit at the wrong times? Really not the case with him from my memory. He underperformed in a bunch of draws, but he settled series by doing well in another game. It was basically the RSA template for that crazy long run of away performance they had. OFC there will be some bad performances in losses as well. But unless your team barely drops any games, that's everyone.

Yeah, the conversation has somehow focused a bit on Steyn and his perceived faults.

At the end of the day for me, I have Steyn 4th and Murali 6th, and that basically comes down to how dangerous Steyn was and the one most likely to succeed if randomly dropped onto most pitches in most countries right now.

He also would have greater impact over more phases of the game, from day 1 to 5, new or old ball.

He was injured. I was just joking as we have never beaten NZ in a test he has played in. But apparently dropping him doesn't help either. Does bring the margin down though. :p
Has he been injured this series? I didn't really follow this series at all. Was surprised that NZ whitewashed India at home when it cropped up in the headlines.

They said he was unwell the first morning of this test and so, was not picked. Picking Axar instead of Siraj would have helped but its what it is.

He did strike fast but the benefits of it are exaggerated because he got hit more often and generally bowled less overs per test.

He got hit in many key games. Some in series losses like against Aus in SA in 2009. Some in draws that had to be saved by the bats. Basically almost once a series abroad against better teams he would have a shocker bad test.

I just find it amusing that everyone thinks I'm too critical.of Steyn yet I'm one of the few who voted him over Murali, and also over Kallis in the other thread.

What kind of silly a point is "he got hit in many key games"?
