I'd go Jones at 3,' Ponting at 4 and Bevan 5. Jones revolutionised ODI batting with his speed between wickets and ability to work 2s then hit a boundary. Chappell was the next best.

I hear this all the time, and it is quite probably true, but then how do you reconcile that with the fairly standard SR that Jones has? Maybe it's like the Mohammad Kaif syndrome, where the player looks very busy dashing about creating singles and twos where there were none, but ends up with a 30 (40) anyways.

Obviously Jones >> Kaif. I would actually put in the same mould as Jonty Rhodes when it comes to ODI batting, only better because he would score more runs per innings and play more match winning knocks than Rhodes.

So, then the question becomes is that more valuable than Watson/Symonds, because I'm assuming you're going to leave one of them out (unless you're thinking of leaving Hussey out which is worse imo).

I really think we should be picking 3-7 here to give a fuller picture of the batting lineup....
No, because we are picking batsmen here. In an ODI team you're probably gonna need your number 6 or 7 to bowl either part of or a full quota of overs. So we'll do the #6 and #7 spots last in this exercise to make sure the team is rounded.

Hi Red hill,
It will be good if you can run a last vote on 4 squad members to round up the squad to 15 choosing from those who lost out closely. There are too many good players losing out.
Good idea. Will do this, to make it a WC squad.

Yeah, I'd definitely leave Watson out. I'd only consider him as an opener in an all-time Australian ODI team.
Symonds, M Waugh, Bevan and Ponting would cover the 5th bowler duties fine. Besides if I didn't pick Jones, I'd pick Greg Chappell. Chappell was a better batsman than Watto and a pretty decent 5th bowler in his own right.

Same strike rate as Martin Crowe and better than the likes of Miandad and Richie Richardson. Viv's SR was out of this world though and a big part of why I think he is still the best GOAT of ODI batting.

Dean Jones faced some great bowling attacks (certainly better than Watson) but perhaps I should've voted for Chappell.

Yes, Chappell was a very good ODI batsman...probably the 3rd best middle-order batsman of his generation after Viv and Abbas.

Chappell's a fair call the more I think about it, his ODI bowling was really good, average of 29 and ER of 4.04.
