The Wheel is Forever
After the WI-Australia series, Australia drop slightly, and West Indies go up, but not by much:

  1. Australia (1569)
  2. England (1016)
  3. South Africa (970)
  4. India (951)
  5. Pakistan (843)
  6. Sri Lanka (808)
  7. New Zealand (790)
  8. West Indies (476)
  9. Bangladesh (80)

The next series is the India-Sri Lanka one in July I believe. Sri Lanka won it last time, if in the unlikely event, India win it 3-0, they'll move all the way into second place. If India win it 2-0, they will be tied with England (England will have a higher score on decimal points). If India win 2-1, they'll be alone at third place while a drawn series will put them equal with South Africa with third.

No change in position, but slight change in points now that the Oval has officially been changed to a draw instead of a win for England.

  1. Australia (1571)
  2. England (1003)
  3. South Africa (971)
  4. India (951)
  5. Pakistan (862)
  6. Sri Lanka (808)
  7. New Zealand (791)
  8. West Indies (477)
  9. Bangladesh (80)

I bet they're partying in the streets of Jamaica tonight as the West Indies have gained an extra point.

Thus endeth the English reign at #2 (since the Ashes):

  1. Australia 1573
  2. South Africa 994
  3. England 984
  4. India 950
  5. Pakistan 862
  6. Sri Lanka 810
  7. New Zealand 792
  8. West Indies 477
  9. Bangladesh 80

India's position did not change as their record remained unchanged in Sri Lanka (2-1 loss). The next tour is New Zealand in Pakistan (which likely will not happen), and Bangladesh in Australia, followed by Australia in India.

If I'd be disappointed to see them not, then that suggests some expectation, no?

I'm not expecting them to trample them underfoot, but I do think that if all goes well they're favourites.

Hmm i don't think India can possibly be favourites given the sides respective recent form. If they are i'll be having a punt on Australia for sure.

Might be rather different had Australia just played in Sri Lanka and India in West Indies TBH.

In fact I'd also hope SL could beat Aus at home right this minute.

Hmm, Sri Lanka were the better team in the last series by all accounts, although i did not watch it so can't be sure. But SA were definitely the better team when they toured India, a series i did watch a lot of. In fact, India have now lost three straight series. They play England next so at least we know it won't be four in a row, but i'd still be shocked if Australia weren't considered favourites- when was the last time they lost any test series?

I watched every ball, and I'd definitely disagree with that. They played on a traditional Indian pitch on only one match, and they lost despite winning the toss and India having to bat last. Second test, they got a custom made SA pitch, and took great advantage.

Well yeah, but I thought it may have been hopeful expectation more than anything. I would also be slightly disappointed if India don't win, but I don't expect them too.

 Not sure about quite a bit of that TBH.

First, as ss says, I don't think SA were definately the better side when they toured India - the First Test was a pointless waste of time, they won the Second easily on a pitch which would have been more at home in SA than India, and India won the Third easily on a proper Indian pitch despite SA having the advantage of batting first. If India had managed to procure Kanpur-esque pitches for the whole series (this isn't easy I know but ironically the ground that managed it is that which historically has tended to produce least big turners of the three used for that series), I'd be very surprised if they didn't win it handsomely.

India haven't lost three straight series' either, they lost in SL, drew at home to SA where they didn't enjoy much home advantage and lost in Australia thanks basically to abysmal Umpiring at The SCG - they deserved a 1-1 draw in that series. That's not a poor record at all.

As for the series in SL itself, well, SL away is almost as much of a challenge as India away. And so it should be too.

When was the last time Australia lost a Test series? England in 2005. When were the last times before that? India in 2000/01 and Sri Lanka in 1999/2000. And if India hadn't had so many things go against them in 2004/05 they could have won that series too. I always think SL and India are in with a good chance against Australia at home provided the pieces fall into place. And they certainly did for SL in the recent series, so as such I reckon they could have beaten Australia had they been playing them.
