CW Test Rankings - Updated Jan 2012

Would have thought that India and South Africa were both ahead of England, but I suppose losing a home Test to the West Indies hurt SA pretty badly. Still, if New Zealand play well in the Tests against England, what will that do to the rankings?

**** me how are we second?
Ashes 2005 still helps :). This ranking system tracks changes over the full FTP (six year program home and away vs. every side). It is not for temporary bursts or dips in form. Comparing India and England's performances during that time:

vs. NZ (away)
India 0-2 England 2-1

vs. NZ (home)
India 1-1 England 3-0

vs. Aus (away)
India 1-2 England 0-5

vs. Aus (home)
India 1-2 England 2-1

vs. Pak (away)
India 1-2 England 0-2

vs. Pak (home)
India 1-0 England 3-0

vs. SA (away)
India 1-2 England 2-1

vs. SA (home)
India 2-0 England 1-1

vs. SL (away)
India 1-2 England 1-2

vs. SL (home)
India 2-0 England 1-1

vs. WI (home)
India 2-0 England 3-0

vs. WI (away)
India 1-0 England 3-0

vs. Each Other (in England)
India 1-0 England 0-1

vs. Each Other (in India)
India 1-1 England 1-1

It's very close and a series here and there can and will change it, it'll resolve it self by Ashes '09.

Ah I like that system actually

It won't resolve itself in 09 though, unless a 5-0 victory for England will take us further ahead :ph34r:

Sri Lanka only drew the series, but they actually did better than last time by winning their first ever Test match in West Indies:

  1. Australia 1577.03
  2. England 1029.56
  3. India 984.77
  4. South Africa 915.87
  5. Pakistan 839.83
  6. Sri Lanka 799.85
  7. New Zealand 761.61
  8. West Indies 443.64
  9. Bangladesh 79.12

The next update will be after the IND-SA series. India will drop below South Africa after the next match, even if they draw the series.

Would it be possible and what would need to happen for South Africa to move above England after the series this summer?

Depends how the next Test match goes. Assuming SA win that one, and then whitewash England in England (not taking into account any other matches that are going to be played), they would indeed take over England. But there are too many variables right now. But remember that SA drew in England already, so while a win helps them move ahead, it won't be as much of a swing as India losing to South Africa at home after beating them 2-0 last time.

The reason SA will shoot past India is just that, after having thrashed them 2-0 last time, they might get thrashed 2-0. Even if they lose 1-0, and even draw, it's a significant decrease in Indian performance (or increase in SA performance).

Congrats to SA on their lead over India. It is a very tenuous position and the next couple series could very well see it fluctuate.

Generally, you have:

1. Australia
<big gap>
2. England, South Africa, India
<medium gap>
3. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand
<big gap>
4. West Indies
<big gap>
5. Bangladesh

Thinking about making a similar system for ODIs if there is interest, but there are a crapload of them, so not sure if its worth it. Especially considering being the top ODI nation really means jack-****, and whoever wins WC is what really seems to matter.

And the fact that I couldn't care less about ODIs. So what I'm saying is, if anyone else wants to spend time updating ODI and keeping track of them, we can work something out.

This system, for Tests, is really nice and the more I think about it, the better job I think Neil did. Unlike the ICC system, which really tracks temporary form, this tracks long term swings and class of a Test side over the full course of the FTP. Which makes sense, considering the FTP is the central program around which all cricket tours are related.

Well, 15 + looking-at-a-picture isn't the most complicated maths, and offers no significant disproval of Morris' words.

Not Terrible
Top 4 matches against each other and bottom 4 matches would all be very close you feel. Perhaps with England trailing the top and Sri Lanka dominating the bottom though.
