Says it all really.

Cook
Warner

Steyn
Anderson

Think we’ll do the middle order now, should be the most straightforward of the remaining positions.

Hashim Amla | AB de Villiers | Virat Kohli | Cheteshwar Pujara | Joe Root | Kumar Sangakkara | Steve Smith | Ross Taylor | Kane Williamson | Younis Khan

note: one of these players may also end up being selected at 6, or even 7 later. Pick your 3, 4 and 5.
Sanga
Kohli
Smith

Kohli

If anything Younis & Sanga belong in the team of the previous decade.

I said this in the other thread too and obviously Kane Smith Kohli is a completely reasonable universal choice, but Amla is getting hard done by in this discussion.

I think he's great but clearly a bit below the level of these 3. Same with clarke. Before the fab 4 broke out, amla clarke were probably the two best in the world around 2011-12

His downfall WAS quite prolonged and painful tbf.

At his prime, candidate for that 3 sure. But that would need some great argument in a court of law.

There really was a generational change midway through the decade. Went from Amla/Sanga/Clarke being the clear middle order leaders to Williamson/ Smith/Kohli in around 2013/14.

If we used the ten year window but ignored decades, then it's pretty reasonable that Amla, Sanga, Clarke, Chanders & Younis all have a huge claim to making a 2005 - 2014 team.

Ditto Kallis, Tendulkar, de Villiers. Even Hussey. Lots of great middle order bats in that time. Whereas now you have the Big 4, Pujara and not much else.

Compare it to other eras and it's actually rather ok (Taylor and heaps of decent players who average over 40).

In the 90s I remember thinking that an average of 40 signified that a batsman was pretty good. The early 00s really changed all our perspectives.
