CW chooses the second greatest batsman ever redux, 100 men from 5 eras whittled to 1

Okay... change of plans again. I wanna stick to the grouping by era thing I've had going the whole thread, but I've found a way to add a bit of spice to proceedings.
How about going from final 10 to 8, then 6 > 4 > 2 > 1 to make it last?

do people want it to last that much longer lol?
Wouldn't it be fun to see people trying to defend their favorites on the chopping block for next round? Maybe go from 10 -> 6 -> 3 -> 1 to reduce a step..

Toss up between Chappell and Gavaskar, but Chappell was so important to Australia's winning record during the 70s. Chappell was to the batting as Lillee was to the bowling.

For example, from 1970 to 1980 he averaged 69 runs over 14 Tests against the West Indies.
