It depends on what you want.

If you want a great keeper who can bat decently, Alan Knott is the better option.

If you want a good keeper who is a great batsman, Adam Gilchrist is the better option.

This is also partly the reason why some people would like to have Wasim over guys like Steyn, Hadlee, Ambrose etc in the all time XI,whom they consider the better bowlers too (though I don't necessarily agree but I get the reasoning). Akram offers the left arm, reverse swinging option and if you have Marshall, Mcgrath already do you really require a Hadlee, Ambrose etc.
Hence, it's not just about being better but also what skills each individual brings to the table and what each person prioritizes while selecting him for that particular role in the team

1. If you are merely picking on primary discipline(wk), I would choose Bob Taylor or Jack Russell ahead of Alan Knott.

2. If you want a wicket keeper who can also bat, Adam Gilchrist is the easy answer. A good keeper, explosive batsman and he bats at number 7.
I'd pick Godfrey Evans.

As I (and I think OS? )said earlier in the thread, reckon his keeping is underappreciated. I’d call him a great keeper. Not an “ATG” keeper, but great for sure.

Yes. And if you want the best new ball pair with the best reverser, you might pick Hadlee and McGrath with Wasim etc. And no Marshall.

Please remind Kyear that is wasn't long ago he was the one passionately arguing with us against picking Knott based on specialist skill in an ATG XI by arguing the keeper position was an allrounder one, and also that Gilly was a lock and Knott didn't have the same consensus. Now he has reversed himself.
This feels too much like carrying a note between two kids in school. I ain’t about that.

Just kiss and make up.

I've asked him before that we should have a truce but he didn't bite. He prefers to keep me on ignore which is his call, I will never put anyone I argue with on ignore though. Guys too sensitive.

I think I would sooner drop Gilchrist from a AT XI than Marshall, but a lot of this has to do with variety- I think he's the worst player of the 3 quicks (Hadlee and Imran) in my team.

His batting is also a factor. I would play Mcgrath if Marshall wasn't available. I don't think the difference between Knott and Gilchrist's batting is much bigger than the difference between Marshall and Mcgrath- Gilchrist had an easier ride for a bunch of reasons.

I prefer the ATG XI to have one conventional pace swing bowler, one seamer corridor bowler and one reverser for a complete attack. Hence Marshall makes it but if I had different priorities he wouldn't. Also no.8 needs to be able to bat.

First XI attack: Marshall, McGrath and Imran
Second XI attack: Hadlee, Lillee and Steyn
Third XI attack: Donald, Ambrose and Wasim

...Anyway getting back to the poll. Looks like Curtly has won, despite the typical diatribe from the usual suspect(s). Time we closed this and moved on. No??

Wasim isn't scoring runs against marshall, mcgrath, steyn etc. I'd just pick better bowlers.

When did a bring Wasim's batting into it? I pointed out he brings a different set of attributes/skills (left handedness, reverse swing mastery etc.) which the others don't. Hence, some people might be inclined to pick him over other bowlers whom they consider better.
