Cross-format XI

Arjun

Whom would you pick in an all-time, all-star XI across forms of the game? You'd have a hard time fitting in a couple of very good players- yes, ODI openers.

Here's one from the ODI era-
  • Hayden
  • Sehwag
  • Gilchrist (WK)
  • Tendulkar
  • Richards
  • Miandad
  • Imran (C, RF)
  • Hadlee (RF)
  • Warne (LBG)
  • Muralitharan (OB)
  • Garner (RF)
Hang on, here comes another-
  • Greenidge
  • Desmond Haynes
  • Lara
  • Ponting (C)
  • Bevan
  • Rod Marsh (WK)
  • Botham (RFM)
  • Kapil Dev (RFM)
  • Akram (LF)
  • Kumble (LBG)
  • Lillee (RF)
And one from the dawn of T20- this will be hard.
  • Sehwag
  • Gambhir
  • Gilchrist (WK)
  • Kevin Pietersen
  • AB de Villiers
  • Mike Hussey
  • Abdul Razzaq (RMF)
  • Vettori (SLA)
  • Muralitharan (OB)
  • Malinga (RF)
  • Tait (RF)

So in essence if you had to pick a single XI for both tests and ODIs (I feel T20 is still too new to start assigning ATG statuses), the best team you could come up with?

Adam Gilchrist+
Imran Khan*
Richard Hadlee
Wasim Akram
Glenn McGrath
Muttiah Muralitharan

Interesting. Would you have to pick the same order for Tests and ODIs - for example, would you have Gilchrist open or bat seven, or neither?

What about an XI that never got to play one-day cricket?

WG Grace*
Victor Trumper
Don Bradman
Wally Hammond
Stan McCabe
Wilfred Rhodes
Gilbert Jessop
Alan Davidson
Godfrey Evans+
Bill O 'Reilly
Sydney Barnes

Batsmen chosen for power, strokeplay and all-round options. Bowlers chosen for economy and variety.

No kallis?

Also, Tait and Razzaq aren't exactly test material

Love the first list though

Yeah, I was thinking this too. Perhaps Lee and Flintoff in for them respectively?

All formats considered, Flintoff must be the best fast bowling allrounder of the last six years.

¤ He is good enough to open in any format. You know it. I know it.He knows it...and I dare say Patrick Symcox knows it.
^ Warne or Murali: a case could be made for either tbh.
Tea20??? Don't give a continental croissant about Tea20.

A team that can play both tests and ODIs unchanged:

Gordon Greenidge
Matthew Hayden
Viv Richards
Sachin Tendulkar
Ricky Ponting [C]
MS Dhoni [Wk]
Richard Hadlee
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Muthiah Muralitharan
Glenn Mcgrath

Edited my post to remove him and put Akram in the team. Akram hit an unbeaten 237 once batting in the lower order and can clear the fence easily in ODIs.

Are you serious about Miandad? He's like the Jayawardene of that era, probably worse.

I realise that my opinion is clouded by quite rampant fanboyism, but I think even Rhodes' own mother would wonder how he got a gig in that side ahead of Keith Miller. ;)

Though personally, if there was one bloke who I reckon would have been a particularly amazing ODI cricketer relative to his Test exploits, it's Learie Constantine.

Ah, knew I'd forget someone obvious. Constantine a great shout too.

if you guys are going to take that route then here is my take on a great ODI team comprising of players who didnt play in the format

trumper
grace (c)
clem hill
bradman
hammond
miller
gregory
noble
cameron (wk)
lindwall
benaud

with so many stroke players and all-rounders, this team is good enough to play T20 as well.
