Kallis in a bagapath XI???

ha ha.. see... i have hadlee, mcgrath, akram and warne as my bowlers. they were top notch in both formats. there is pace, spin, variety, accuracy, math winning quality.... practically everything you need in a winning bowling unit with this combo. i would be happy to have just the four of them bowl in tests. in ODIs I need a fifth bowler, for which kallis and richards are good enough to bowl 7 and 3 overs respectively.

dhoni, hadlee and akram can score 70 runs between them in the last few overs in case the top order has a bad day. it is not likely to happen often as hayden and greenidge both were phenomenal in whatever format they played in. and they are followed by richards and kallis. and lara and hussey are the late order stalwarts anyways. so the batting is solid too.

i have a second team along the same lines. again, i am not changing the batting positions of the players and i am choosing only those who played enough in both formats.

Second XI for both formats

smith
jayasuriya
ponting
g.chappell
lloyd
s.waugh
dujon (wk)
kapil
pollock
murali
garner

Of course I am serious. Javed Miandad is one of the great batsmen of all-time. Surely that is not in contention ?
he averaged over 50 from his first innings to his last. mr. consistency for sure. and he was the master in batting with the tail. no one did it better than him. belongs in both formats quite comfortably.

if you guys are going to take that route then here is my take on a great ODI team comprising of players who didnt play in the format

trumper
grace (c)
clem hill
bradman
hammond
miller
gregory
noble
cameron (wk)
lindwall
benaud

with so many stroke players and all-rounders, this team is good enough to play T20 as well.
Albert Trott not a bad shout in that side either, I'd think.

So many great names from the past.

I know that Sobers only played a solitary ODI. isn't he good enough to get there?

Tendulkar doesn't get into your first or second XIs?

Tendulkar doesn't get into your first or second XIs?
I can never accept him as a legitimate test opener. Same goes for Gilly. So I have to not include two of my favorite cricketers.

Bagapath, so I am no the only one who rates Smith a tad higher than Sehwag, or was there another reason why you left him out of both your teams?
You could easily replace Sanath for Sehwag.

My team:

Hayden
Greenidge
Ponting
Tendulkar
Kallis
Richards
Gilchrist (wk)
Imran (c)
Warne
Lillee (taking into account his WSC exploits)
McGrath

Tendulkar may have to twirl a few as might Richards. Kallis in for mainly his bowling.

The only problem with this lineup is that Hayden, Greenidge and Kallis are all in the same team. All three have relatively poor strike rates, which could get this team bogged down somewhat.

Interesting exercise. The thought of a Ponting/Tendulkar partnership makes me a little wet tbh.

smith is a superior ODI opener compared to Sehwag. And a better test opener than Jayasuriya. While Viru and Sanath are better than him in tests and ODIs respectively, the difference is not as pronounced as his lead over them the other way around. But in all honesty, any of the three could be in both teams. I am choosing Smith because he could also be the skipper. (EDIT: Lloyd is more qualified to be the skipper. The other argument stands, though)

Surely Gilly is good enough to bat 7 and Tendulkar 4 in ODIs?
Mmmm... not too sure. Love them at the top of the order. they would be my first choice for opening my dream ODI XI. but dont think tendulkar was as good as Richards or Lara in the middle order in the limited overs game. And in tests they all belong in the same plane anyways. so I choose the other two to make sure I dont lose anything in either versions.

Gilly is my first choice no.7 in tests. but dhoni is so good at finishing ODIs that I am willing to compromise a little, very little, for my test team that actually doesnt need too much batting anyways, and get him in for both teams. Would also like to consider him for captaincy. If he can lead the present Indian team for more than two years without losing a series, imagine what he could do when hadlee, akram and mcgrath take the new ball.

He wouldn't know how to use them to begin with taking his field tactics into account and they would ask him to just **** off in all probability.

This would be my team :

Matthew Hayden / Virender Sehwag
Brian Lara
Viv Richards
Jacques Kallis
Sachin Tendulkar
Ricky Ponting
Imran Khan ( c )
Adam Gilchrist ( + )
Richard Hadlee
Glenn McGrath
Muttiah Muralitharan

- It could have been Sehwag but his failure in SAF has raised some questions in my mind once again.
- Dieing to include Wasim and or Pollock but just dont think they deserve a place ahead of Richard Hadlee
- Its hard to send Lara opening but the guy had played many a games where he had to come to the crease in First 5 overs of the game so I guess he can adapt pretty well ;)

Nah, he always lets his experienced bowlers set the field...he knows his shortcomings...so that won't be a problem.
