and putting either Gilchrist or Dhoni in at 7. I think Gilchrist would be more suited to coming in and tee-ing off at the death than either Sangakkara or Dhoni tbh..
McCullum better with the gloves than Gilchrist for me, and Gilchrist easily better than Sanga's and Dhoni with them.

McCullum is also a great tail end slogger, though Gilchrist is of course better.

The other option is to go with Sanga at 5 and move Clarke and Symonds down to 6 and 7 respectively, but I'm not keen on that option. 5 is too low for Kumar and 7 is too low for Symonds...

Symonds is far too good to be pushed down there in ODI cricket.

Yeah, that's probably true. If it comes to it, I could see dropping Hussey, putting Sachin in to open with Hayden and putting either Gilchrist or Dhoni in at 7. I think Gilchrist would be more suited to coming in and tee-ing off at the death than either Sangakkara or Dhoni tbh..

Maybe:
Tendulkar
Hayden
Ponting
Pietersen
Clarke
Symonds
Gilchrist+
Lee
Bracken
Bond
Murali
Very good side, my only issue would be the fifth bowler. Guys like Symonds, Clarke, Tendulkar can be useful but not enough for a World XI standard, would advocate putting Shaun Pollock in at 7 and replacing Clarke or KP with Sangas.

Flintoff IMO.

Haha, how do you spend over an hour on a thread, and forget Lee and Pollock?

Lil help?

Not good enough with the bat these days to hold down a number seven, especially in a world XI.
Arguably the best ODI quickie though don't mind a long tail with such a gun attack. Barring total collapse Flintoff/Lee/Bracken could support a legitimate batsman.

Ideally there'd be a better 5 bowling option than Symonds, with Symonds being the 6th option. Flintoff would be the obvious candidate, but, again, recently, he's not been much chop, and is not good enough to drop one of KP, Clarke or Hussey. Symonds and Clarke would do the job most days I reckon, and given the wickets Lee, Bond and Murali would have taken in 90% of matches, plus that batting line up, I think its a fair enough effort. I reckon cunning captaincy would actually see Symonds or Clarke get a wicket a surprising amount of the time as opponents overdo trying to attack the one weak point in the team.
My previous response on this point. I think the extra batting will save your bacon 90% of the time. Pollock can be targeted on non-helpful pitches as well these days, and Flintoff has no current form.

I can't fathom any attack that doesn't include Flintoff Bond Lee Bracken and Murali making a dent in the batting lineup.

Maybe if you got... Malinga, Akhtar, Tait, Johnson, and Vettori together or something. Yet jeez! If there was ever a team that could play 5 bowlers (3 of which are handy with the bat, Flintoff being a bowling allrounder maybe even Lee as well) it's this one!

He's an excellent bowler but not as good as Bond, Lee and Bracken in the format imo. But as Matt said (edit: actually he didn't), he's just injured too much for me to consider him for these things. I'm, not sure if we'll ever see him play again with such debilitating injuries.

Ah yes the sad side of the cricketing world, injury.

Lee and Bond > Flintoff > Bracken (easily the most underrated ODI bowler in the world for me)

Yet definitely all up there in my books, Flintoff has looked splendid with the ball for a while now. His injuries aren't that serious though are they?

In alot of pain everytime he bowls and it doesn't look like it will end any time soon. Just went in for another surgery not long ago in Holland. Don't think he's better than Bracken personally although the difference isn't great. If you want to factor in batting though, then yeah it's enough to get him over the line there.

I made a mistake up there, I wanted Akhtar instead of Asif.

Tendulkar
Hayden
Gilchrist
Ponting
Hussey

Kallis
Lee
Bond
Murali
Akhtar

If I remember right i voted

Adam Gilchrist+
Graeme Smith
Jaques Kallis
Paul Collingwood
Mahela Jayawardene
Yuvraj Singh
Chaminda Vaas
Brad Hogg
Zaheer Khan
Bret Lee
(11 slot saved for Peter Ongondo)

Vaas and Lee with the new ball, Ongondo, Khan and Kallis as change bowlers, Hogg tyhe main spin bowling option and if those don't work out there is always Collingwood and Yuvraj to turn to

Big hitting opener / Innings builder, very good at getting centuries
Best batsman in the world at 3
Most explosive batsman in the world at 4
Another explosive batsman at 5
Best finisher in the world at 6
Best last 10 slogger in the world at 7

Then bowling:

Shoaib / Lee

Bit of a tail but meh. You wouldn't expect this team to be more than 6 down very often
