Have you not heard what he said? So all these analysts on TV and Journalists have interpreted it one way, yet you interpret it another way? Its plain and simple in his quote
Yep. I've heard him talk about it. Didn't say Tendulkar was second best. Said he reminded him (stylistically and aesthetically) of himself more than anyone. Called his wife to the lounge and she agreed that he looked like Don batting.

I think that you're right Monk. This is probably another example of people remembering what they want to remember, not what was actually said.

Bradman's tale about watching Tendulkar on TV, told to Martin in an interview in 1996, became the stuff of legend. Five years before his death, Bradman told Martin that he noticed similarities between the way the then 23-year-old Indian played and himself after seeing him bat in one-day internationals.

''I was very, very struck by his technique, so I asked my wife [Jessie] to come look at him,'' Bradman said. ''Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this fellow is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on the television and said 'yes, there is a similarity between the two'.

''To me, it's his compactness, his technique, his stroke production, it all seemed to gel as far as I was concerned … that was how I felt.''

Shillinglaw, who analysed Bradman at length and had scientists at Liverpool's John Moores University recreate his strokes, accepts there are some facets of Bradman's batting that are echoed by Tendulkar. But, technically, he says, they are chalk and cheese.

Yep, this. Both Bradman and Tendulkar were/are around 5'5-5'6, so it's hardly likely Bradman would have asked his wife if she think's a strapping 6'1 Jacques Kallis reminded her of him at the crease. I've never read any references suggesting The Don thought Sachin was the 2nd best batsman.

Incidentally, thought a few may suggest Cook is one the most unfairly treated these days, not that I personally think the criticism of his captaincy is unjustified.

Calling it now, by the end of the series between England and India, Ishant Sharma will feature in this thread.

Hopefully this works as a jinx.

I have also not seen any reference like that. Only think is certain that he rated Sachin as the best in his generation and rated him among the top 4-5 batsmen in history of cricket.

---------------------

"By 2000, he held the view that they were the best in world cricket, but that Tendulkar just pipped Lara as the world's number one," it says.

Perry adds that by mid-1998, after watching Tendulkar destroy Australia in Tests and one-day games in India, Bradman ranked him with Barry Richards, Arthur Morris and Gary Sobers.

If anything, Sharma deserves to be in this thread now. He's hardly a great bowler, but the way most people go on about him he's made out to be worse than Sami.

Tbf, Bradman selected his XI and Tendulkar was the only batsman from the last 2 decades or so to feature. In fact, apart from Tendulkar, the only real batsmen in the team were Barry Richards, Arthur Morris, Bradman himself, and Sobers. Only 5 batsmen, but had 5 specialist bowlers + Sobers. Such a weird team.

Bradman's team would look a lot better if someone like Imran were included over Bedser or one of the spinners. Tallon at 6 is ridiculous. I doubt he ever batted there in tests.

What? I am assuming you've never seen Ishant Sharma bowl? He might not be worse than Sami but that is hardly any consolation.

I have. My point still stands, he's hardly anything special but he's better than what he's made out to be.

Way off topic, I know, but if Bradman gets to choose the first XI...

Barry Richards
Arthur Morris
Don Bradman
Sachin Tendulkar
Garry Sobers
Don Tallon
Ray Lindwall
Dennis Lillee
Alec Bedser
Bill O'Reilly
Clarrie Grimmett

I'm pretty confident my XI following would beat his in a 5 test series

Len Hutton
Sunil Gavaskar
Viv Richards
Graeme Pollock
Jaques Kallis
Brian Lara
Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram
Malcolm Marshall
Shane Warne
Glenn McGrath

Dude, can you just explain to me the fact how he makes the indian team? He is poor even by associate team standards. Just bowls brainlessly. You need to get wickets by setting batsmen up not aimless fast bowling.

As much as it pains me, I can't agree with this. Ishant is that weird kind of bowler who would tear it up in lower level cricket but is hopeless at test standard. He's uncomfortably in between the two levels. He generally does ok in our domestic scene if I'm not wrong.

Fair enough maybe I went overboard with it but I am sure India would snap up some of the Irish bowlers or Dirk Nannes in a heartbeat (I think most countries would snap up Dirk Nannes tbf)
