Davis Cup - Quarterfinals
Saturday

Antofagasta, Chile. Chile will be left ruing what might have been as they gave up a winning position on more than one occasion in a water-tight doubles rubber with Austria. With news that Renato Varas had not recovered from his five-set epic the day before, Patricio Sanchez was joined by Alex Rojas as the hosts looked to capitalise on a good start. In a toey first set between the two sides, it was Jurgen and Zbiginiew Boniek who drew first blood with a break in the penultimate game setting up the big breakthrough for the Austrians. Trailing 3-5 in the second set, the Austrian brothers again played brilliantly late in the set as they clinched four games on the trot to rob the Chilean outfit blind in the second set. The tight nature of the match continued right throughout the third and fourth sets outside of a bagelling in the third set tiebreaker, but it was the Chileans who again gave up a break of service in the fourth to blow a 4-2 lead. The Bonieks would again take four in a row to secure a 2-1 lead for Austria; the 7-5 7-5 6-7(0) 6-4 win meaning the visitors need just one more point from tomorrow's reverse singles matches.

Moscow, Russia. Russian pair Sergey Malachenko and Alexey Yarkin have put Russia in sight of a semifinal appearance after they eased past Martin Moberg and Linus Petrus to hand Russia a 2-1 lead over Sweden in Moscow. The experienced pair played a convincing game of tennis in front of a packed Luzhniki Palace of Sports crowd; growing from strength-to-strength as the match progressed. After a nervous start, the Russians soon got into the swing of things to claim the first set 7-5 - the Swedes struggling on the carpet as Malachenko put away a smash to hand the Russians the double break in the second. From there it was all academic as the hosts refused to let this point slip like the second one yesterday as they raced away 7-5 6-2 6-3. Needing just one point in the reverse singles tomorrow, Dmitry Orlov faces Henrik Henrikkson first whilst Vladimir Gryzlov may be replaced by teenage gun Boris Denisov for the match against Bjorn Donaldson.

Umag, Croatia. French Open champions Hugh James and Ralph Robinson have put the United States through to the semifinals of the Davis Cup after a comfortable straight sets win against Croatia's Miroslav Brdar and Ivan Cesljar. In a disappointing performance in front of the Umag crowd, Brdar and the lanky Cesljar failed to worry the James-Robinson pairing who looked quite at home on the clay surface. After easing to a two set lead thanks to some brilliant work from James at the net and Robinson at the baseline, the Americans suffered their first fright of the day as James dropped serve to hand the hosts a 2-0 lead. But that was quickly gobbled up after some indiscipline from a frustrated Brdar; the Americans booking a spot in the semis with a 6-4 6-3 6-4 win.

Marbella, Spain. Serbia are on the cusp of pulling off a massive upset in Marbella after Radivoj Daneu and Savo Petkovia pulled through in bizzare fashion to hand the visitors a 2-1 lead in Spain. Drawn against French Open and Wimbledon quarterfinalists Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio, many thought the Serbs took a risk in pairing two men together who had no experience as partners. But the risk paid off immediately as a stunned crowd watched on in horror as the favourites failed to win a game in a thirty-six minute opening set dominated by the retrieving ability of the Serbians. Whilst the Spaniards managed to get on the board in the second, they were still outclassed as the underdogs looked like claiming it in straight sets. But there was another twist in the tale, and in amazing circumstances the Spanish put themselves right back in contention by producing a 6-0 set of their own as the Serbian pair went right off the boil. But when they looked likely to storm back and claim a historical victory, Spain were immediately countered by the level head of Radivoj Daneu who showed no fatigue from his five-set win over Emelio yesterday. Serving for the match, it was Petkovia who finished things off with a brilliant little hook forehand which took the line and secured a 6-0 6-3 0-6 6-3 boilover. Should Daneu go down to Daniel Paez Blanco in the first reverse singles rubber tomorrow, the tie will come down to a fifth match between Sergio Joaquin and the unpredictable Danijel Micic who just yesterday put in a sensational display against Blanco.

Final - Newport

Jefferson Drake's big Sunday has started off in roaring fashion after he secured a third career title in showdown with in-form local Jason Bradley. In their second ATP level final against each other, the two produced a Newport classic as both men looked in brilliant touch after dominant semifinals. Drake started the best of the two as he claimed the first set comfortably thanks to a break of service mid-way through the set, but he was soon to hamstrung by the determined Bradley who looked in no mood to lose to the upstart CWLander. With neither man looking likely to drop service, it was Bradley who prevailed in the tiebreaker to send the match to a deciding third set. It was there that both players started to get the shakes on service as the first four games resulted in breaks. But they almost simultaneously found confidence as the set again petered out to a third set tiebreaker. But with the scores locked at 1-1, Drake earned a mini-break and charged away with the contest; sealing the match with a crisp forehand down the line to claim the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in style 6-3 6-7(3) 7-6(2).

  • Seeded players out: Jason Bradley.

The day only got better for the Belarusian-born player as he and partner Martti Korpinen continued their charge to the ATP Masters Series finals by clinching the doubles crown deep inside the match tiebreaker. In another tight contest against Liam Bailey and Matthew Charnock, the top seeds looked like easing to a well-deserved tournament crown at 6-4 3-0 up. But the Brits struck back to take a double break of service and charge into a decider with the momentum well-behind them. But the Queen's Club champions managed to regain their focus in the break between sets, and the match tiebreaker went down to the wire. Although bringing up a championship point of their own, the fourth seeds could not prevent the favourites from stealing victory from the jaws of defeat; Drake completing an awesome week with a 6-3 4-6 (11-9).

  • Seeded teams out: Liam Bailey / Matthew Charnock.

22-year old Spaniard Javier Villaneuva has clinched a maiden career title in a three-set scrap against Aussie teenager Harry Thompson. The eighth seed controlled most of the match, but he did have troubles against the 17-year old in the second set after Thompson worked hard for a break of serve in the eighth game. In the final set, Villaneuva gave up a 4-1 lead to allow Thompson 5-5, but again produced the goods when it mattered to seal a 6-4 3-6 7-5 win. In the doubles, makeshift Italian pair Massimo Prodi and Pablo Scalforo celebrated a successful week together as they took a straight sets win over fourth seeds Ritwik Bhutia and Harpreet Gupte. The Indian pair abandoned Davis Cup action to play in the Challenger and were left disappointed as Prodi and Scalforo dominated the clay 6-4 6-3.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Davis Cup - Quarterfinals
Sunday

Antofagasta, Chile. Austrian Heinz Hainisch has secured the European nation's place in the Davis Cup final four after he romped past Chile's Jefferson Quezada in four sets. In a horror weekend for the Chilean number one, he struggled against the consistent Hainisch who atoned for his five-set loss on Monday to Renato Varas. The second set, which Quezada managed to win, lasted nearly as long as the first and third where Hainisch dominated in front of a dispirited crowd. The last remaining non-European nation falling with a Quezada doube fault; Hainisch winning 6-1 5-7 6-0 6-4. With the tie decided, Chile did not have to risk Renato Varas for the reverse singles; Alex Rojas doing the South American country proud as he smashed Martin Reiter 6-2 6-1 in the dead rubber.

Moscow, Russia. Russia have completed a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Sweden as both Dmitry Orlov and Boris Denisov won their reverse singles rubbers. Needing just one point from two matches, Orlov was keen to end it quickly for the hosts against Swede Henrik Henrikkson. But the Russian was unable to do this; the Swedish number one ensuring the match would go deep into the fifth with some dogged play. But Orlov got the better of Henrikkson who, in his second five-set clash in three days, toiled against the well-rested Russian number one. With his first serve percentage dipping below forty, it was a matter of time until Orlov got the break and secured a 4-6 6-4 5-7 6-3 7-5 win. Replacing Vladimir Grylzov who gave up a two-set lead on Friday, teenager Boris Denisov completed the 4-1 victory by taking a tight three-setter against Bjorn Donaldson. In a much better performance than his straight sets loss on Friday, Donaldson worked hard but was ultimately caught short by the Russian number two; Denisov snatching a 7-5 4-6 7-5 win.

Umag, Croatia. The United States have yet to lose a point in this year's Davis Cup campaign as they completed a 5-0 rout of Croatia in Umag. Darcy Cowan replaced world number two Jason Hall in the first reverse singles rubber to face Niko Ulemek who also came in for Croatia's number one Miroslav Brdar. The Wimbledon champion seemed to go through the motions in a straight sets win against the world number 125; pulling through when he needed to to secure a 6-2 7-6(2) win. In the other reverse singles match, French Open semifinalist Dwayne Murdoch prevailed in a three-set slog against Nilikar Midid. In a two-and-a-half hour affair, the dogged Murdoch returned everything against the impressive Midid and went on to secure a 6-3 6-7(4) 7-6(5) win.

Marbella, Spain. In the biggest upset of the tournament so far, one of the tournament's favourites Spain has been sensationally knocked out on home soil by the mighty Serbs in Marbella. Trailing 1-2, world number one Daniel Paez Blanco ensured the hosts would still be in the contest come the fifth rubber as he accounted for a tired Serbian number one Radivoj Daneu. Undefeated in Davis Cup tennis, Blanco looked fresh and ready for action as he plundered a 6-2 7-5 6-4 win against an uninspired left-hander. Serbia's number two Danijel Micic put in a fighting effort against Blanco on Friday, but his inconsistent nature left many wondering which Micic would show up for the fifth rubber against Sergio Joaquin. But the world number 21 put ease to their concerns immediately as he raced through the first set 6-1 with the same glorious shots which could not get past Blanco on Friday. Nevertheless, the local Joaquin came back valiantly against the Serb and levelled the match at a set each before matching it with Micic in the third. But it was there that Micic got an early jump on Joaquin in the tiebreaker to put Serbia in sight of a momentous victory. Joaquin had other things to say about that, though, as he quickly jumped to a 4-2 lead thanks to a rare break of service. But this was Serbia's day and Micic roared back into complete control with a double break of service to secure Serbia's passage into the semifinals against the United States with a 6-1 3-6 7-6(2) 6-4 upset.

Huge effort from Drake!

Well done SBI again.

As for Bowenburg. I've not played since April 3rd, a very long break, can't wait to get back on the court.

Blanco should have played doubles for Spain, no way would they have lost
Probably, but Andueza-Emelio have had pretty good success as a doubles outfit. Should never have lost to Daneu-Petkoviä anyway.

For this week, this is what I have. Tell me if I missed anything out:

Båstad
Drake
Maxum
Korpinen
(Oxenstierna WD)

Stuttgart
Smeltz
Hancianu

Manta
Mustard
Bowenburg
Stakhanov
Banks

If you want doubles, just ask and I'll give some options. :)

Exceptional work from Drake. Flying the flag for the virgin CWLand tennis nation.

Looking forward to getting back on the court soon. It seems like I've been away for ages. Hopefully, I'll come back refreshed and push on to gain some big ranking points.

EDIT: If there's some doubles available, then I'd be glad to take the court with Jojo.
