Cricketer Of The Year
Newport; Ramat Hasharon (Qualification) - July 6-12 Season I

Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
Qualifiers - Newport

Qualifying Singles (Draw)

Just one week after earning qualification to a second Challenger tournament, fourth seed Matt Bre was unable to advance from the qualifying round at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. After prevailling in a tight affair against Jason Schmidt in the first round, Bre looked odds on favourite to account for American wildcard Benjamin Turner. But he struggled early in a disappointing first set, as the determined Turner controlled his aggression to take the first set 6-2. Whilst Bre took the second 6-2 and looked in promising form, he was broken early in the decider and was unable to recover; Turner qualifying 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Qualifiers: Randy Bruce; Nikola Todorovski; Benjamin Turner; Gunnar Valsson

Israel Open
Qualifiers - Ramat Hasharon

Qualifying Singles (Draw)

Likewise, fellow CWLander Vladimir Stakhanov fell in the qualifying round to miss a spot in the main draw of the Challenger in Ramat Hasharon. The fifth seed got through Israeli pair Jonathan Oved and Kobi Zdibat in his first two matches without incident, but never looked like troubling seasoned Chilean clay courter Leonel Romero. The top seed took the first set comfortably, and survived a late comeback from Stakhanov to advance 6-2, 7-5. Stakhanov will now have to focus on his doubles campaign with Jarko Maxum; though they have been given a tough start against third seeds Jean-Jacques Berthier and Abel Bonnin.

Qualifiers: Ritwik Bhutia; Beni Itach; Leonel Romero; Brendan Tito.

ISAEV, Denis BLR v HIGHSMITH, Oscar GBR
(Q) VALSSON, Gunnar ISL v DAY, Julian USA
(WC) ADAMS, Jesse USA v (2) KENNEDY, Davis CAN

With a number of Davis Cup ties occuring this weekend, the only ATP level tournament this week is fairly shallow with many preferring to take a rest after The Championships. Nevertheless, top twenty players Jefferson Drake and Davis Kennedy add some star power to the tournament, whilst Wimbledon quarterfinalist Kim Vollan, Eastbourne finalist Jean-Alain Depuis and San Jose champion Hugh James will also compete for the crown. Top seed Drake has the harder draw with possible quarterfinal and semifinal matchups against Boyd and Vollan waiting, and whoever comes from this half of the draw should win. PREDICTION: Vollan def. Kennedy.

Update from Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships

CWLand's Matt Bre has replaced Nikola Todorovski as a lucky loser in the main draw of Newport after the Macedonian suffered a hamstring injury and was forced to withdraw.

Round of 32 - Newport

Qualifying Singles (Draw)
Men's Singles (Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

World number 122 Spas Delev has looked to end his grass season on a high by upsetting seventh seeded veteran Jean-Alain Depuis in the upset of the first round at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport. After a frustrating bulk of the season on the quicker turf, Delev stunned the red-hot 36-year old in straight sets thanks to some surprising patience in his game. Usually prone to rash mistakes, Delev attempted to outmanouevre the Frenchman who had previously made the finals at Eastbourne. He did this successfully; earning a second round clash with Brit Oscar Highsmith, 6-4, 6-4.

In the all-CWLand clash, Jefferson Drake was tested by Alex de Wet, but ultimately proved too good in a tight three set affair. The top seed started explosively against de Wet who took the best part of the first set to warm up. But after doing so, a bashfest ensued as de Wet managed to goad the world number 16 into a battle of power. But after dropping the second, Drake shifted to a more considered approach as the volatile de Wet struggled to contain his excitement; dropping service early and never challenging the top seed again as Drake advanced 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. He faces American wildcard Sam Lazzeri who proved far too good for CWLand lucky loser Matt Bre. In his first ATP match, Bre failed to make the most of replacing Nikola Todorovski against the Dublin Challenger finalist who proved too polished despite having arrived in Newport just ten hours before the match; winning 6-3, 6-0.

Finally, Drake's doubles partner Martti Korpinen also took an unlikely victory in a lengthy affair against local hope Strongth Badlee. The teenage American started brightly against the doubles specialist to take the first set 7-5, but dropped service immediately in the second to hand the CWLander a 2-0 lead. Korpinen capitalised to level the match at a set each, but the world number 162 had some fight left as he took the match deep into the third. In a long tiebreaker, Korpinen's touch proved the difference between the pair as he came to the net four times for four points in the breaker to secure a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(7). He has his work cut out for him, though, in the second round as Jason Bradley - one of the few men to beat world number two Jason Hall - awaits.

  • Seeded players out: Toby Brookes; Jean-Alain Depuis; Pascal Schmidt.

Round of 32 - Ramat Hasharon

Qualifying Singles (Draw)
Men's Singles (Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

After a number of weeks out of the game, second seed Billy Spleen has jumped right back into competitive tennis with a crushing win against Chilean qualifier Leonel Romero in the first round of the Israel Open challenger event in Ramat Hasharon. Spleen raced through the first set in just twenty-four minutes on his favoured clay; before suffering a scare early in the second as Romero edged ahead 3-1. But Spleen came back with successive breaks of service to set up a confidence-boosting return to the circuit. He has a tougher assignment in the second round as seasoned Italian Paolo Scalforo awaits following a tight win against Indian qualifier Ritwik Bhutia.

The transition from the harder courts to clay did not, however, suit Scotland Rivers at all as he was embarrassed in straight sets by local wildcard Ya'acov Mizrahi. Rivers had produced promising form on the European hard courts, but the more to Israel did not agree with him as Mizrahi took all his chances in an authoritative win. Whilst the 6-2, 6-1 scoreline perhaps unfairly reflected on Rivers who was in most games throughout the match, he struggled with the ball coming onto the racquet slowly as he was left to focus on the doubles with partner Vladimir Stakhanov.

Finally, fourth seed Jarko Maxum survived an early scare against Spain's Eugenio Galindo to advance to the second round. Maxum collapsed to 0-3 in the first set against the Spanish unknown, before rallying to take the set 7-5. Whilst he failed to get the jump on his opponent in the second, he did enough to steal a late break of service to advance somewhat unconvincingly 7-5, 7-5. He faces Colombia's Carlos Gonzà who upset Switzerland's Victor Zsasz in three.

  • Seeded players out: Johan Ortiz; Václav Zeman.

Quietly confident, Bradley likely to be complacent, will take advantage.

Thrilled to notch a victory.

Fogot to mention Mustard would like to enter all available doubles tournaments with Davis (if possible). If Davis is unavailable I'm happy to team with someone else.
This.

What's the list of tournaments thing? I feel I've missed a trick here.

Noticed that Jojo and I made the semis at Wimbledon. Disappointing to go out, but the five setter probably drained me and all the shops at Wimbledon were selling were strawberries and cream when I wanted a good Mince 'n' Cheese pie.
