World number three Daniel Páez Blanco will head into the ATP Masters Series Rome final as overwhelming favourite after surviving a blockbuster three-set clash with world number one Jason Hall. In their second meeting in as many weeks, Blanco took the early initiative as he went ahead a break against the American star. But Hall, who continues to improve on clay, ensured he wouldn't fall behind as he broke back immediately to level the first set at 3-3. The first went to a tiebreaker, and in a marathon decider Blanco surged ahead after having squandered four earlier set points. The previous meeting between the pair saw Blanco advance in straight sets (64 63), and the top seed was obviously intent on not letting the same thing occur as he snagged an early break on the serve of the Spaniard. The break proved decisive as the world number one wrapped up the set with a service game to love to level the match at one set each. But, as has been the case in many of his clay matches this season, Blanco looked just as fresh in the third as he did in the first; the super-fit third seed pulling away thanks to early breaks of service to advance to his fifth clay final 76(8) 46 62.

In the other semifinal, the dream run of Italy's Carlo Amato came to a disappointing end as he was beaten in a dramatic three-set clash with Hungarian József Boros. Many pundits were looking forward to an Amato-Blanco final, but it looked as if Boros would make light work of the normally aggressive Amato after a dominant first set. Boros set about taking the pace off the ball against a man who only knows one gear; Amato struggling to lay a clean racquet on the ball as he sent the ball spraying around the disappointed Rome crowd. But after dropping the first set 1-6, Amato took the initiative as he came out aggressively and romped to a 5-1 lead. After sealing the second 6-3, Amato looked to continue to overpower his Hungarian opponent; but Boros seemed to have collected his thoughts in the break between sets as he worked hard to stick with the Italian dynamo. It seemed fitting that such an intriguing match would head to a tiebreaker, and it was there that Boros broke the hearts of the Rome crowd as he sealed a dramatic 61 36 76(4) victory.

Seeds Out: 1-Jason Hall (USA).

Spain's Daniel Páez Blanco has officially become world number two after he extended his clay court undefeated streak with a victory over Hungarian sixteenth seed József Boros in the final of the Rome Masters. The pair had met in finals twice previously (Vina del Mar and Buenos Aries) and Boros looked intent on avoiding a third straight defeat to his powerful Spanish opponent. Blanco managed to get a break of service against the sixteenth seed early, but Boros showed his hand with a powerful effort against the service of the Spaniard to break back almost immediately and level the scores at 4-4. Whilst Blanco secured himself another two break points in the next game, he was unable to edge ahead as the first set meandered to a tiebreaker. It was there that Blanco failed to repeat his performance against Jason Hall in the semifinals as the Hungarian clinched a tight tiebreaker to take the all-important first set. But it was a different story in the second as Blanco, despite missing two opportunities to get the early break in the opening three games, finally edged ahead as he began to show more of the flair which had seen him rise to world number three. It seemed that eventually losing the second set with a double fault to be broken for the third time in the match proved too much for the Hungarian as he disappeared without a trace in the decider to hand Blanco the match. The 67(6) 63 62 victory gives Blanco his fifth singles title on clay this season.

Seeds Out: 16-József Boros (HUN).

Third round exit costs Serbian star
Blanco up to second

Daniel Páez Blanco's unblemished clay season has continued to aid his rise in the rankings as he overtook Serbia's Radivoj Daneu to claim second place in the ATP Rankings released today. Daneu's third round defeat to Hungarian József Boros ensured he would slip to third should Blanco maintain his unbeaten record. The third seed did, and now closes within 505 points of taking top spot on the rankings. Boros also benefitted from his finals appearance as he climbed eight spots to a career high tenth position. Vladimir Gryzlov proved the biggest riser in the top hundred as he climbed 13 spots to number sixty. Among the fallers, Rick Henson continues to suffer due to a lack of tennis as he fell outside of the top ten for the first time this season, whilst Jean-Christophe Genghini fell five spots to 68.

Top Fifty

Brett Read's quarterfinals appearance not only marked a much-needed return to form, but it also allowed him to keep his spot in the world's top thirty. He rose five spots to 25; reclaiming the mantle of CWLand number three from Randy Smeltz who also went up one spot. Top two Sven Oxenstierna and Jefferson Drake retain their positions, whilst Jamee Hancianu, Heath Davis and Roy Daniels slide. Jarko Maxum earned himself much needed points from qualification and, despite not yet having won a tournament match, rose eighteen spots to number 135.

I'll take a break. I'm **** on clay anyway. I'll spend my time practising on the clay courts of Cyprus to make an astonishing comeback at the French Open.

Or something.
