CricketWeb Tennis - Season I

David

International 12th Man
Quality, the better player won, but didn't have to crush me so convincingly.

Still, managed to take three games, pretty pleased.

Japan Open
3rd Round - Tokyo (Japan) - Indoor Hard

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Top seed Sven Oxenstierna was quick to find form again in Tokyo as he played flawless tennis in a 6-0, 6-1 thrashing of Morocco's Ross Onwye. Where the world No. 6 had an umimpressive second round victory and Onwye had a dominant win, Oxenstierna managed to bully the Auckland finalist inside an hour to claim a crushing win. Against Jimmy Holland on Wednesday, Oxenstierna served at just 40 per cent, but ramped that up to 63 per cent against the star doubles competitor as he surged into the quarterfinals comfortably.
  • Oxenstierna will face countryman Heath Davis in the quarters after the tenth seed extended his record over Jamee Hancianu to 2-0 with a come-from-behind win against the CWLand teenager. Much like he did in their encounter at the CW Open, Hancianu started brightly and managed to break the Davis service twice in the opening set. But Davis soon found his range, and after stealing a late break in the second never looked back as he steamrolled the Bucharest finalist 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
  • The opposite side of the draw pits another pair of CWLand's finest together after Jefferson Drake and Jojo Mustard produced confident displays to take their third round matches. Mustard was made to scrap in his 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over Austria's Zbiginiew Boniek in Thursday's opening match; Boniek playing dogged tennis to keep Mustard honest. But the French Open quarterfinalist had more polish and took a crucial break early in the third and deciding set as he cruised into the Japan Open quarterfinals. Meanwhile, second seed Jefferson Drake is odds on favourite to prevail here as he dropped just one game in his forty-nine minute clinic against Japanese veteran Ninteh Doh. Doh had secured his own impressive win earlier in the week, but was no match for the world No. 12 who barely broke stride in his sensational 6-1, 6-0 win. In his two matches this week, Drake has spent less than two hours on court and has dropped just four games.

  • Seeded players out: Morgan Carter; Jamee Hancianu; Ross Onwye.
  • Success was the order of the day for CWLand's doubles teams as all three duos made a winning start to their campaign. CW Open champs Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard were rarely troubled by Croats Ivan Češljar & Ivan Vuka as they cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The Croatian pair struggled to find any rhythm and were confidently accounted for by the second seeds who secured passage into the second round.
  • Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen were expecting a tough scrap against Wayne Boyd & Morgan Carter, but left the court relatively untroubled as they also advanced in straight sets. The Americans got the jump on the third seeds to secure a 3-1 lead in the first set, but it was all downhill from there as Drake and Korpinen worked their way back into the contest with service breaks and eventually advanced 6-4, 6-2. They face fellow CWLanders Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum as the two bounced back from poor singles showings with a tight 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Vladimir Belousov & Mykhaylo Martynenko.

  • Seeded players out: None.
China Open
2nd Round - Beijing (China) - Indoor Hard

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Despite a good opening victory, Matt Bre still needs some work if he is to compete at this level after a 2-6, 2-6 defeat at the hands of Dmitry Orlov. The Russian seventh seed had little trouble against Bre as he took advantage of the nervous youngster's elementary mistakes to control the match from start to finish. Bre showed some signs that he belongs at this level, but was unable to get into the rallies against his stronger opponent as Orlov secured a straight sets win.
  • All seeds but Tiago Matias made it through to the quarterfinals after he was shocked by world No. 98 Ivars Emsis in straight sets. Matias was always going to be wary of Emsis' powerful service, and could do little to counter it as the big Latvian fired down nineteen aces and did not drop service once en route to a 7-6(6), 7-5 win. He faces a winnable quarterfinal matchup with Italian sixth seed Antonio Bachunelli after he overcame Javier Villaneuva in straight tiebreakers.

  • Seeded players out: Tiago Matias.
  • Big name casualties was the order of the day in the doubles draw as just one seeded team remained following the first round of action. World No. 1 pair Hugh James & Ralph Robinson were shock casualties as they gave up three match points to fall to a 4-6, 7-5, 10-12 defeat against Alex Karlen & Jochen Sas. Artem Krohmal & Merab Shvelidze, the second seeds, followed them out as they gave up a one-set to love lead against Brits Liam Bailey & Matthew Charnock. In the most expected of the upsets, third seeds Manfried Manz & Walter Schiller were beaten in straight sets by Antonio Bachunelli & Vladimir Gryzlov, 7-6(7), 6-3.

  • Seeded players out: Hugh James & Ralph Robinson; Artem Krohmal & Merab Shvelidze; Manfried Manz & Walter Schiller.
Open Tarragona Costa Daurada
2nd Round - Tarragona (Spain) - Clay

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)

  • Third seed Scotland Rivers was forced to overcome a sluggish start to earn his place in the quarterfinals of the Tarragona Challenger with a tough two hour win over the Czech Republic's Michal Simr. Rivers was disappointing in the first set as Simr played confident tennis; the Czech No. 5 taking three breaks of service to set up a set to love lead. But Rivers came back strongly in the second set, and an early break of service set up a dominant display that allowed the CWLander to level the match at a set each. Simr regained his composure in the decider, but wasn't able to hold on to send the match to a tiebreaker as the classy Rivers secured a quarterfinal match with Carlos Gonzá.
  • In the biggest upset of the second round, top seed and world No. 86 Aldo Marín fell short of victory as he was stunned by world No. 173 Marco Pellegrini. Pellegrini recovered from a horror second set, and proved too good in the end for the Paraguayan to the tune of a 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-4 victory.

  • Seeded players out: Aldo Marín.
  • The only seeded team to fall in the doubles draw was Cordenons Challenger runners up Juan-Pablo Serrano & Xavier Suarez. The Argentine pair were beaten in straight sets by Spanish duo Eugenio Galindo & Xabier Jiménez 6-3, 6-4.

  • Seeded players out: Juan-Pablo Serrano & Xavier Suarez.

  • World No. 6 Sven Oxenstierna has booked his placed in a sixth ATP semifinal, after prevailing in straight sets against fellow CWLand product Heath Davis. In a match much tigher than the one-way scoreline suggests, Oxenstierna's calmness in the tight situations proved the difference as he managed to steal crucial points off the booming Davis serve, whilst remaining solid on his own. Davis was almost flawless in the first set on service as he gave up just six points in his opening six service games, but it was the tiebreaker where he had the set stolen from him as Oxenstierna finally converted his third set point. The second set started well for the Pickford champ who held to love in the opening game, but in the fifth he stumbled as Oxenstierna took advantage of a brief opening to put away an aggressive backhand to set up what would be a 4-2 lead. From there the top seed held on to advance to the semifinals 7-6(8), 6-4, and looks a real chance of finally breaking through to secure a maiden tour title. Standing in his way next is fifteenth seed and world No. 50 Atthaphol Sae-ul who sensationally ousted sixth seeded German Becker Haas in a marathon three-set affair that lasted nearly three hours. In a gruelling display, Sae-ul saved two match points en route to a 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(4) upset, and will find it tough to play with the same intensity in Saturday's semifinals.
  • In the bottom half, second seed Jefferson Drake overcame a sluggish start to move to tomorrow's semifinals with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win over compatriot Jojo Mustard. The eighth seed looked to have the first set as he flew out of the blocks to hold a 4-1 lead, but Drake managed to overcome his early shock to fire back into the set with a pair of service breaks. Whilst a frustrated Mustard managed to hold on and send the set to a tiebreaker, Drake had all the momentum and quickly used it to his advantage. The second set was all Drake as he continued his awesome run of form this week that has him favourite to claim a fifth tour title. Next up is Canadian fourth seed Davis Kennedy who showed the kind of form that saw him shoot up the rankings earlier in the season; too good for Pierre L'Estrange 6-1, 6-4.

  • Seeded players out: Heath Davis; Becker Haas; Pierre L'Estrange; Jojo Mustard.
  • It was success for Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw as they upstage fellow CWLand side Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum in straight sets. The inexperienced pair put up a good showing in the first set, but found themselves outclassed by the cohesive Canada Masters champions who stormed home to a 6-4, 6-2 win. In what has been an all too familiar situation for Drake this week, the third seeds find themselves against another CWLand outfit after Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard overcame a spirited display from French duo Jean-Alain Depuis & Pierre L'Estrange to advance 7-5, 6-4.

  • Seeded players out: None.
China Open
Quarter Finals - Beijing (China) - Indoor Hard

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Three of the top four seeds will contest the semifinals in Beijing tomorrow as Ivars Emsis of Latvia continued his awesome run to book a showdown with Ukraine's Illya Altman. In the upset of the day, Emsis proved too strong for sixth seed Antonio Bachunelli; his serve the difference as he was broken just once and never broke the Italian's serve in his 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-6(7) win.
  • On the other side of the draw, top seed József Boros looks a likely candidate to take out the China Open after he smashed eighth seed Nilikar Midid in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. He will face local hero Zhijun Sun in the first semifinal following the fourth seed's 7-5, 6-4 win over Dmitry Orlov of Russia.

  • Seeded players out: Antonio Bachunelli; Li Wang; Nilikar Midid; Dmitry Orlov.
  • Local team Gai Kai & Lu Xun remain the only seeded pair in the doubles draw after they came from a set down to beat Juan Manuel Cortés & Javier Villaneuva in an interesting affair on Court 2. The Spaniard took the first set from the Bangkok champs, but struggled to maintain the pressure as the Chinese doubles pairing advanced 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. After stunning top ranked pair Hugh James & Ralph Robinson earlier this week, Belgian-Swiss pair Alex Karlen & Jochen Sas were thoroughly trounced by Aleksander Alitspritsin & Ivars Emsis in the first quarterfinal. Sas and Karlen managed just two games as the fell to a 1-6, 1-6 loss.
  • In the other semifinal, Antonio Bachunelli & Vladimir Gryzlov will do battle with Zhijun Sun & Hau Li-an in an interesting contest involving three premier singles players.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Quarter Finals - Tarragona (Spain) - Clay

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Third seed Scotland Rivers is through to a second Challenger semifinal this year after he comfortably accounted for Colombian Carlos Gonzá in straight sets in Tarragona, Spain. Rivers, who made the third round at the CW Open last month, ensured he wouldn't start as slowly as he did in the second round as he blitzed Gonzá with aggressive tennis. Despite not being the most comfortably clay courter, Rivers controlled the baselines well and cut down on the errors to take the first 6-1; and, in the face of increased pressure in the second, held his nerve to secure an emphatic 6-1, 7-6(4) win. He now faces second seed Aksu Emrem who destroyed Christopher Durand 6-4, 6-0.
  • In the top half, Penza champion Jefferson Quezada will meet Italian No. 6 Marco Pellegrini.

  • Seeded players out: Néstor Moreno.
  • There were no surprises in the doubles draw as all the favourites won through to the semifinals. Top seeds Grigory Khugaev & Alexey Korskakov had the most trouble as they escaped with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win over wildcard entrants Alonso Fedrique & Rafael Fernando.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Impressed with these doubles lads who play ten sets a day.
Its this sort of attitude that led to me being fined for wearing a t-shirt reading "Heef sez: Harden the **** Up" in our singles match.

Gutted to lose to the Ox. Its always good to play him though as you know you'll get 100% of the crowd supporting you.

Another big doubles match vs. Drake & Korps looms. Should be a classic.
