Cricketers who are really nice

Whatever it takes!!!
I don't think it makes him less nice.. maybe a bit more stupid, sure.. But being stupid is not more likely to make anyone less nice than say being sanctimonious.. Not saying Gilchrist is, but in a more general manner..

Nah was just saying going after him for walking is a dead-end in comparison. What he said in the book wasn't so much 'not nice' as being a bit loose with the known facts about the timeline of changes to the law and the evidence behind them. I don't think there's malice behind what he said but there's definitely ignorance; I just did a search for the original study in 2000 where they first tested Murali's deliveries and his off-spin and top-spin were tested at about 3.5 degrees of flexion and his leg-spin at about 8 degrees. Gilchrist conflated Murali's elbow flexion angle with the 15 degree limit and suggested they'd set it just above his to keep him in the game for political reasons when only his doosra was in breach and not every time he bowled it, shown in a later study. Be a bit surprised if no-one mentioned this to him so either he's just wrong or wilfully ignorant for whatever reason.
Fair enough. It's probably unwilling ignorance, or a non-acceptance that Murali could possibly have 3.5degree flexion - which I'd hold too.

Which is fair enough, like a lot of the science in the area it's based on a research model, definitely not above criticism or immune to refinement. Gilchrist just gets into ropey territory when he takes the next step and assumes Murali is protected from above or somesuch when, by UWA's testing (after being tested elsewhere), he was well under the agreed-upon limit for his offie/toppie/leggie. Even if the limit was lowered to 10, Murali would have been under (just). Only his doosra got to the limit. Gilchrist is obviously entitled to his opinion (it's his book!) but it's based on some faulty assumptions. For me, one interesting part of the paper was that Murali's flexion was higher for his leggie. Puts paid to that old chestnut of not being able to chuck a leggie.

Anyway, I'm not saying it's definitive proof of his lack of good blokiness. Just saying if someone is determined to find something to have a go at him for, going after him on walking is a dead-end and the above is as close as you're going to get. Even then he was pretty nice about it.

(prick)

EDIT: Actually, on reflection, maybe he only had greater flexion in his arm for the leggie because of his already bent arm.

Matt Hayden is my least favourite Australian player. If questioned why, I couldn't put in to words exactly why. Just seemed to be a bit of a **** in a "nice guy who writes cook books" costume. Wolf in sheep's clothing etc. I could be completely wrong though....

His borderline homoeroticism with Langer really irked me too :wub:

haha just saw a suncorp ad for the first time, gilly walks along being a general nice guy opening doors for people and stuff going on about being genuine, ends with 'genuine, worth walking for' as a play on words for switching banks. perfect timing

Oh and Muralitharan hasn't been spoken of in this thread, not as a potential really nice cricketer. One of the top blokes and belongs in the conversation.

And while we talk of Murali, we can't not mention Warne. I personally think he was a very nice chap on the field and I like him most among the Australian cricketers of their golden generation.

Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda de Silva should have a place!.

Mahanama was well reputed, but was a spikey charachter on the field.

Sledger of his generation, IMHO. Not a bad guy, but, as with Lara, too much baggage to be called "really nice" without qualification.

Good point BB. A ready smile, a camera friendly persona and a media friendly outlook alone are not enough.
