From a game like that you can't make too many changes, and there was only one for the next game - Mr Wright dropped to the seconds and Patrick Nath stepped into his place. The first home game of the season, a bumper crowd, a prematch pyrotechnics display and the first appearance of the new cheerleading troupe 'the Webettes' ensured a jovial atmosphere which was made even more lighthearted by the news that Ian Blackwell had cried off the match to enter the Taunton heat of the world speed eating competition, unfortunately Blackwell's 39 pies in 5 minutes were not enough to win through.
Somerset had somehow lured West Indies' barnacle Chanderpaul to their ranks and when they won the toss and batted it was clear their intention was to spoil the party atmosphere by boring everone to death. Lathwell and Trescothick had both scored half centuries when a mini collapse saw 4 wickets fall for not many with Richards the chief beneficiary. But then then another new signing the obdurate Cottey joined Chanderpaul and they put on a century in 45 overs. It was so slow that when a catch did come along Cloete duly fluffed it through being half asleep. Malone finaly broke the partnership with cottey scoring 48 from 147 balls. This only brought Turner in and he continued the trend with a partnership of 83. Three quick wickets but then Caddick frustrated the bowlers - Chanderpaul was finally out for 146 from 439 balls and Somerset took 177 overs to get to 434 all out.
The carelessness was evident at the start of the CW innings, 4 early wickets falling, before Cloete and Richards steadied the ship with a 50 partnership. Then Jellett had to retire hurt when he fracture his wrist, leaving CW effectively 6 down for less than 200. Fortunately they had Buggsy Malone coming in at 8 and his 89 together with Cloete's 2nd successive century got CW back in the match though the last 4 wickets then went cheaply to concede a lead of 66. 368 all out
There was a sniff of a chance though for CW, the match was entering the evening session on day 3 but early wickets from Nath then Chapman reduced Somerset to 107-7 at lunch on day 4 just 173 ahead. Unfortunately the eigth wickets never arrived and Somerset declared just before tea on 178-7 declared.
The chase was non existant as there were only 33 overs, but Vimes hit an unbeaten 56 to end on a positive note. A dissapointing draw but Somerset clearly only came for one thing.
