Clasica de Almeria

Team: Jamee Gray, Mat Mitchell, George Roberts, David Arroyo, David Millar, Amets Txurruka, Bradley Wiggins

A not particularly important race in Spain, mainly for race practice.

Mat Mitchell joined the early break with Ruiz from Andalucia, but they were caught shortly after the final climb, despite at one point having a lead of 11'30.

Gray went in two breaks; one over the final hill with Posthuma, Muravjev and Lastras, which was quickly squandered, but with 15 km to go Gray attempted to leave the group again. Pieter Weening (orange, Rabobank) and Riccardo Riccó (yellow, Saunier Duval) joined him.

Break forming

Riccó then left again with eight km to go. Gray countered, and a tentative truce was agreed in the final kilometres, as the three tried to keep the peloton at bay; with 600 metres it seemed like a good choice, as Gray passed Riccó through the middle.

However, the attack came too early, as his legs suddenly stopped working and Riccó and Weening came back to pip him to the win.

Frameries - Dour, 189 km

Past winners of this race include Robbie McEwen (2004), Magnus Bäckstedt, José Samyn (the first winner, whom the race was later named for after his untimely death)

Team: Chris Dwyer, Jamee Gray, Nathan Hoy, David Kennett, Bugs Malone, Håkon Mørk, Bradley Wiggins, Steffen Wesemann

Other contenders: Axel Merckx (T-Mobile), David Moncoutié (Cofidis), Sergei Kolesnikov (Unibet), Simon Gerrans (AG2R)

An early break got away, but Casson Dairy started the work early in order to shatter the field on the hills. Eventually, Gerrans started an attempted for a long breakaway, and Jamee Gray joined him, only for the peloton to set a huge pace. 36 men remained after a frantic period.

50 km remained on the last serious climb, and Mørk joined Mario Aerts of Predictor-Lotto in another breakaway. They got a 40 second gap, but Merckx broke loose on the next, shorter climb, and joined the two. Wesemann, Gray and Dwyer managed to join Merckx, but Dwyer struggled downhill and on the flat, and fell off the group.

In the finish, Casson Dairy opted for a tactic of wearing out Merckx, rather than attacking and forcing him to counter. It was not very successful; Gray, already tired from the efforts in Spain, fell off with a couple kilometres to go, and Merckx sprinted from Wesemann's wheel to take another early-season win and confirm form ahead of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Yet another podium it is.

Giro del Capo (Tour of the Cape)

Team: Fensome, Forner, Kearsley, Pares, Reddlapalli, Chris Hoy.

A team that should, in all honesty, dominate. A very weak startfield around here, largely only including the best South African riders - in Barloworld - and Jelle Vanendert, a Belgian who rides for Chocolade Jacques.

Prologue, 7 km ITT, Paarl

Reddlapalli set a top time early on. No one really challenged.

Stage result:

Stage One, Paarl - Tokara, 129 km

A gravel road climb finish, which hampers Fensome the least. Pares joined the breakaway, a 11-man monster, and earned some intermediate points and seconds, but Chocolade Jacques set up a huge pace on the 8 km second-climb to set off literally everyone. It had six riders up front with 4 km to go of the climb. Only Forner and Fensome managed to follow, and by the top the situation was:

11-man group with Pares
Chocolade Jacques + Forner & Fensome @ 2'56
Peloton 1 with Barloworld and Wiesenhof riders, + Reddlapalli @ 4'08
Peloton 2 with Caccia (Barloworld) and Kearsley @ 5'18

Look at all those red/whites...

Chocolade Jacques continued to pull away on the flat against disorganised groups behind, while our two leaders were thankfully tagging along. So, however, was Chocolade Jacques' leader, Jelle Vanendert, who didn't have to share any work with his dedicated team-mates.

By the top of the second-to-last-climb, and 30 km remaining, the Pares group had been eaten and left. The situation was now as follows:

Stubbe, Vanendert, Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques), Forner, Fensome
Various remnants of the breakaway (Pares @ 1'32)
The two earlier pelotons, now merged, @ 4'32

Forner knew he'd be weakened on the gravel road, and banked everything on attack 10 km before the finish. The Belgians were worn out with effort, and Vanendert wanted to save himself for the final climb, leaving Forner with a precarious 40 second lead with 5 km to go. As expected, though, the gravel got too tough for Forner and Vanendert stole the victory on the line.

Stage Two, Stellenbosch

A moderately difficult circuit, with two hills in the 20 km lap to be done six times. Kearsley, then Reddlapalli went into breaks, as we wanted to put pressure on Chocolade Jacques so they worked themselves out again; four laps into the race Vanendert simply pushed away with a couple of Barloworld guys, and Casson Dairy desperately clung on with Forner and Fensome. Forner never gained quite the impressive Langkawi form, and was set off despite a good effort, but Fensome realised something had to be done when the group caught Kearsley's small group, and when Vanendert attacked, the Zimbabwean countered. He then sped from his wheel, and as they passed the top and gained mountain points at the penultimate top, Fensome had a good minute.

This lead was easily held stable through the final kilometres; the first breakaway was gathered in by the peloton, who still lost four minutes, while Forner rallied to third place.

my effort so far has been a bit dissapointing especially as i did so well on my debut - hopefully the ground will flatten out and my sprinting instincts will step in...

Stage 1, Kortrijk - Bellegem

Team: N Hoy, Gelman, Read, Steegmans, Thomas, Vasseur, Weber

Flatter than a pancake, yet wind threatened to split the peloton apart after attacks rained on the first sprint. However, no one wanted to keep the pace up, so the peloton gathered together again, with Gelman in a quite strong 6-man break with mainly continental tour riders.

The break got five minutes, but cooperation was awful, making it an easy task for Discovery and T-Mobile to hunt it down.

With 48 km to go, an interesting group containing Aerts, Peña and Cretskens decided to leave the pack, but Casson Dairy chose to sit tight with our main breakaway rider, Hoy,
already spent and Weber resting for the hills on stage three.

However, it showed that the riders weren't on top form. Facci simply sped from Read on his wheel, and Read finished seventh in a very disappointing sprint, before Baumann came on the left to pip Facci; earlier Steegmans had wasted himself pulling out for Read, who had seemed on better form in the bunch. Steegmans will get the sprinting job tomorrow though.

As an added disappointment, everyone except Read and Steegmans lost time in the overall, due to lacking sprinting capabilities. Among the time-gainers were the inimitable Axel Merckx.

Time to change the aims to a stage win.

Stage 3, Bloemendal

A considerable 5-km climb ends this stage, and Fensome looked to attack. However, Pares was the one to break away, and Wesley van der Linden eventually joined him in a long break. The group was not interested in chasing, Casson Dairy eventually regretting their decision not to increase the pace before the final hill, as Fensome had to increase the pace himself. He attacked too early, and Vanendert could counter and pass Fensome easily; despite a late rally, Fensome lost 32 seconds to the Belgian, who goes into the fifth stage as favourite.

Milano - Torino, 199 km

Team: Kennett, Malone, Mørk, Roberts, Gr Thomas, Voigt, Walsh, Wesemann

A 9-man group went away, before they were joined at 60 km by a bunch of climbers, including Alex Efimkin (Barloworld), Gorazd Stangelj (Lampre), Fränk Schleck (CSC), Julio Perez, Domenico Pozzovivo (Panaria), George Roberts (Casson Dairy), to join Andrea Tonti (QuickStep), Walter Pedraza (Selle Italia) and José Gutierrez Cataluña (LPR) in the breakaway. The 18-man group worked well together, though Roberts did little work and bade his time for the mountain.

It didn't help much. He was not strong enough to pull away over the top, where a 7-man group remained after hard pulling by Schleck and Pozzovivo.

Roberts was the weakest in the sprint on the flat, where the former Phonak rider José Enrique Gutiérrez, now on LPR, who took second in Giro d'Italia last year, now took his first serious one-day win. From the main bunch, Wesemann and Walsh got up to the remnants of the breakaway, and sprinted to respectable 16th and 21st respectively.
