Congratulations Murali

Aaahh, but he has already built a nation's dreams, despite these suspicious minds.
He did definitely build a nation's dreams ....and all those really desperate struggling poor humble folk in Sri Lanka....have one hero they think of during their times of trouble ....

.....He is Sri Lanka's national Idol...Sri Lankans all love and cherish him...I have little doubt after Cricket, a career in Sri Lankan Politics is only for the asking or even some honorary position in Sri Lankan political hierarchy...

Well yes, it's always possible the record will be broken. Breaking down the different variables:

No. of tests per year: I doubt this will increase significantly at any point in the future. It may actually decrease if test cricket declines in popularity and if 20/20 really takes off.

Length of career: This one may increase if there are major medical breakthroughs which allow cricketers to routinely continue till their mid-40's. Perhaps by 2100, 20+ years of full-fledged international cricket may become common. In that case I suppose Murali's record could be broken.

No. wickets per test: Murali averages an extraordinary 6 per test and 7 per tests over the last 80 tests or so. Among players who have played 50 tests or more only a handful have averaged more than 5 per test and many great bowlers have failed to reach that level. I think it's unlikely we will see another 6 per test bowler for the rest of the century.

1000 is definitely within his reach...but I have grave doubts...now, that if he will ever reach 1000 ....My hunch is retirement by 800 or 900 is definitely on the cards...But as he himself said last week, once someone really good comes by as a contender for his position or even succeed him ...he will be forced out....I think he will struggle to reach even 900 in his current bowling....

but wait, late next year 2008 SL play Zimbabwe in a 3 test series followed by Bangladesh ....I think those Tests will boost his tally as well as his Trip to the Caribbean in March 2008 - I can see him now taking 100 wickets next calendar year...

Well done Murali!

Where's the thread where we predicted which English batsman he'll get for his 709th? I'm thinking I made the correct prediction.

Congrats to Muralidaran. If he manages to play for a few years longer, he will reach 1000 I reckon.

Congrats to Muralitharan, although I am not his biggest supporter I feel his accomplishment in breaking the record is a real credit to him.

Yea, I don't see 1000. He'd have to play between 50-60 more Tests! And Sri Lanka are not like other countries when it comes to the number of Tests. IMO, he'll retire with around 800.

The man gets like 6.5 wickets a game, and he needs to play 50-60 tests to make 1000? Either way, I agree with you, I don't think he'll reach 1000 - mainly on his own accord than anything else.

Also, probably mentioned alreadt on here, I think this record, along with Bradman's average will quite possibly last a long time.

Congrats to the man, well-deserved. I too would love to see him get 1000, but I don't think it's likely. I think he'll retire on around 850-860. Once he gets past 800 he'll go for a while thinking "if I can keep this up a couple more years I might get to the 1000 mark", but then there'll come a time when age catches up on him. I doubt it'll ever get to the stage where he's not allowed to retire on his own terms, though. He'll never be ineffective enough to be dropped.

Nah, I didn't, else I'd have said it outright. I'm pretty sure he'll get 692 (Warne's relevant figure being 691) before all that long, anyway (he's on 605 in between these innings).

The fact that I quoted np10 and italicised the "the usual" should tell you all you need to know.

I actually think his record will likely stand for a hell of a long time, if not two-three life-times because in my opinion the number of tests played will not increase as it did from Trueman's era onwards, but will stay the same if not decrease.

If that's the case, 700+ test wickets seems damn impossible. Of course anything can happen, but I am pretty confident in saying that whatever Murali ends up with come the end of his test career will not be broken in my lifetime.
