Wow im really surprised by the lack of love for Greg Chapell imo, the best batsman post packer

Here are 25 batsmen who scored in excess of 3000 runs in the Post Packer era tests against major cricketing nations averaging more than 45 runs per innings. I've removed Adam Gilchrist from the list since he has already made it to the team as wk/batsman. Aravinda De Silva and Michael Clarke miss out narrowly.

The list contians some all-time legends who are certainties in most dream teams. It also has some members of the 10000 run club. Two excellent batters who are also very good glove men. One player who is also a member of the 200 wicket club. Some stylists. Some grafters. And two match fixers.

Please select three of them to bat at nos 3,4 and 5 behind gavaskar and hayden. you can choose them based on their specific positions or jut according to your whim. once the poll is over i will assign the batting positions to the top three ranked batsmen according to their most successful positions.

more than voting for your favorites, write about your reasons for choosing them. it will always be fun arguing for one great over the other.

Never realised how good Ponting's stats are even if u removed Zim and Bang. Lara's seems to be little affected and SRT ever so slightly lower than his career average.

I'm really shocked at how few votes have been cast for Ponting, considering he's probably gonna end up with stats superior to SRT and Lara.

Gonna go with Ponting, Lara and Tendulkar. Kallis is definitely in, but he takes an all-rounder's slot.

The choice of Chappell over Richards and the reasoning behind it is pretty lame. Richards had far more of his Test career after Packer than before it - for Chappell it's the other way around. Richards absolute supreme peak was just before Packer but his record after is still equal to Chappell if you take into account that he went past his sell by date - something which Chappell didn't do.
I agree, Richards was still considered the best batsman in the world for much of the 80s.

Yeah, it's pretty criminal. His record walks over any of his contemporaries. More complete than Tendulkar and Lara, quite easily. I was going to put in Tendulkar originally but I forgot about Chappell. Of course, Richards has to be there.

3) Ponting
4) Richards
5) Chappell

Ever so slightly? 3 average points.

Kallis is nowhere. Imran will be at 6, Gilchrist 7 and four bowlers.

I just remembered an argument you use against Sehwag Manan; saying he cashes in when it's easier - averages during different innings:

Tendulkar:
1st inn: 71.78
2nd inn: 52.13
3rd inn: 44.35
4th inn: 36.72

Ponting:
1st inn: 67.41
2nd inn: 56.60
3rd inn: 43.32
4th inn: 53.95

Also, Sehwag's for interest sake:
1st inn: 62.83
2nd inn: 66.20
3rd inn: 32.18
4th inn: 30.33

In your spinner free world perhaps. Gilchrist could easily bat at 6 and Imran at 7 and that's not weak batting behind Gavaskar, Hayden, Richards, Tendulkar and Lara.
One can only hope.

Well, I look at 1st and 2nd innings as one and then 3rd and 4th as one. But yes, it definitely works against Tendulkar in my eyes, no doubt. He had one great innings late in the game recently, I'd want to see a couple more before he goes. If he can do that, I might put him equal to Chappell.

Chappell played only 30 odd Tests post Packer and though his record in that time was outstanding there's very little logic behind picking him ahead of Tendulkar who's record is incredible by all standards and should be stats-mongers dream.
