Can't Keep Can Bat

Is it just me or has the art of keeping hit an all time low?

I think back to a time where every Test side had a great keeper. Bari, Kirmani, Marsh, Murray, Knott etc.

Its only really Geraint Jones and Parthiv Patel who are really bad.
The rest of the keepers are ok.

Geraint Jones was so **** abysmal today! omg.
bring back Read! he's a fantastic keeper who can hld a bat.

Might be able to hold a bat, just a shame he can't score with it. :p

TBH though Jones was terrible yesterday and I doubt Read would've made the same mistakes.

I tend to agree with Archie though, the standard isn't particularly high today, with the exception of Boucher, Sangakkara, Gilchrist and McCullum. I don't really rate Browne, Mashud, Karthik, Patel, etc. as specialist so I see your point.

Browne's out of international cricket for good I hope. Don't include him.
Sorry, wasn't sure if he'd played his last international or was just part of the West Indian group on strike.

Jones has had a bad game this game but not sticking with him would be folly I reckon. If he's not improved by the end of the series, maybe consider someone else but dropping a 'keeper mid-series is a HUGE decision.

Dinesh Karthik's a good young keeper. Mark my words in 3-4 years, he will be rated as one of the world's best.
Akmal and TAibu are also excellent wicketkeepers - you fail to mention them..

McCullum's still not in the top tier of 'keepers IMO. Still drops balls stone-cold for no reason.

On SBS, they said Geraint has dropped 9 catches and missed 1 stumping in 16 tests.
Unless there's a marked improvement in the rest of the series, England have to consider dropping him for someone who can keep better.
A quality keeper is a must for every team.

Well I've never actually seen Karthik play so I'll take your word for that.

Akmal and Taibu are both decent keepers IMO, but not absolutely brilliant.

I suppose, but his wicket-keeping form has definitely improved since he first started keeping in the national side.

Its because selectors see a keeper as more of a batsman than a keeper. Ie im sure if england had dravid at there dispossal he would keep for them as he could "maybe" do a better job than jones

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
I agree with KP. Every side wants their own Gilchrist.

I was thinking about this the other day. If the current national keepers were just batsman, would you even keep them in the side for their batting ability? Who would you choose to replace them?

Whatever it takes!!!
I like to call it the "Gilly Effect". But I think young guys like Ramdin, Kartik and Akmal have a lot of potential. Boucher and McCullum are unproven on the dustbowls of the subcontinent.
