Tbf, as to the first point the substance was banned too, so doesn't make that much of a difference.

And as for the second point, yes it is wrongdoing. It may not have been in the rules at the time, i am not sure but Marlon Samuels was banned for a year or 2 just recently for doing exactly the same, infact for just having contact with a bookie despite there being not any clear evidence of taking money unlike with Warne, May and Waugh.

Not that i agree with the comparison, but in isolation those instances were clear cases of wrongdoing too, where they got away despite recommendations of a ban from a independent commision Cricket Australia set up itself. And Tim May is the current FICA head too iirc.

I don't want to derail the thread, but have to briefly respond.

Diuretics are only banned in sports (where the competitors' weight isn't a factor) because they can potentially mask performance enhancing drugs. Taking a substance that makes you dehydrate isn't likely to be beneficial in a sport like cricket where the taking on of fluids is pretty important to maintain performance.

A very reasonable inference is that Warne quite possibly did take steroids to speed the recovery of his dislocated shoulder and then took the diet pills to mask this, but there's no definite proof of this, just a balance of probability. That his ban was reduced to one year from a potential two on the strength of his **** and bull story was frankly farcical. But there it is; one suspects but one can't know.

WRT taking the money from the bookmaker, it was very naive and greedy, but not necessarily evidence in and of itself of anything untoward. One might well ask why a bookmaker would pay so generously for such relatively benign information and therein lies the rub. Once one takes money from a dubious source it can be used as leverage at a later date.

Samuels was, if you like, made to carry the can for the past sins of others. There's no proof he actively tried to negatively affect the outcome of games in which he played, but after CA's piss weak handling of the Waugh & Warne debacle any consorting with illegal bookmakers is going to be jumped on.

Yeah, all charges will be dropped.

I think his crime was far more serious, since he was the defence minister and committed fraud (are you a tory?). My point was that politicians get away with a slap on the wrist so easily.

I am just very sad to hear about them going to prison which I think is over the top. But I do agree that life ban is now due because of this guilty verdict.

They broke the law. Not just a piffling ban is good enough. I hope they all get 5 year sentences. It might stop others in future if they think they will lose their freedom if they do the same.

If you really want a harsh deterrent then send them to Prison in Pak. There they will get beaten and tortured by the Pak police.

I'm not a Tory, in fact I'm not anything, but I'd hardly say he's got away with anything yet.

What I don't understand is the relevance. It's bad enough reading the crap about Warne and Waugh and trying to excuse these 3 pieces of scum based on that, but now using an unproven allegation against a politician?

Well, if Pakistani jails are anything like Indian jails, the fact that they have money and are famous, they'd be treated like royalty and it'd almost be like living in a hotel. For a normal person, it's obviously much worse.

I don't care if they go to prison or not but one thing I don't get why should their 5 yr bans be turned in to life time bans by ICC haven't we already established this case verdict had no bearing on ICC bans.
