I always thought Kallis could have done more, to tell you the truth.

With bat and ball.
yeah myabe so with the ball, especailly as he is dubed the best all rounder. But with the bat i think he doesnt underachieve at all, last yeah he nearly broke bradmans record of 6 test tons in a row, and he sored a couple in a row in ODI's against the Windies

I have always thought of some great players who achieved a helluva lot but I felt they could have done much more !!

1. Tendulkar
2. Sobers
3. Colin Cowdrey
4. Prasanna
5. Bishen Bedi
6. Ted Dexter
7. Vishwanath
8. Subhash Gupte
9. Dennis Lillee
10. Ian Botham
11. Frank Worrell

Come to think of it, add a wicket keeper and this is a very formidable line up :)
Okay...if your considering players that had good records anyway, but could of been better, add Martin Crowe to your list.

Although Crowe will go down as one of the greats bats of his era, I think he had the potential - if not for a career ending injury and an awful start to his test career - to be one of the great batsmen of all time.

I agree.

At the risk of many jumping on to me, I felt at times he was a better batsman than Greg Chappell.

Although it is not the topic of this thread, one player badly under rated during his time and by posterity was Trevor Bailey. Just came to mind :)

Talking of pakistan players, there was this guy called "Basit ali".Great stroke player.People labelled him as "javed miandad-2".But could not last long and was not able to make a cut in international cricket.Mostly underachieved in whatever opportunities given to him.

wow you are asking a lot of some of those players:

Tendulkar 71 international centuries, 23635 international runs
Sobers: 8000 test runs, averaging almost 60 with the bat, 230 test wickets
Lillee and Botham both held the wrold record for test wickets etc
i'd be interested in knowing if theres ever been a player more talented than tendulkar whos played cricket(and personally, i dont think bradman was significantly more talented)?
yet there are several players who average more than him, won more games than him despite playing in far more bowler friendly conditions against better quality bowlers than tendulkar has.

Those very talented current or past players who never reached their potential at test level though mental fraility, injury or any other reason. Players who had the ability to be much better than their test records suggest.

Test XI
AAMER SOHAIL- many thought as talented as Anwar
KEN RUTHERFORD - Great natural ability, Terrible test record
GRAEME HICK - does anything else need to be said of Hicks failure at test level
GREG RICHIE - fat cat oozed class, but always found lazy ways to get out
MARK RAMPRAKASH - Often looked class, record suggests differently
CARL HOOPER- was supposed to be the next Richards
ANDREW FLINTOFF - (up til 2003) - Is just starting to fulfill pontential
ADAM PARORE (wk) -Talent to be batsmen alone, still just averaged 25
CHRIS LEWIS - thought of as the next Botham in late 80s until he played test cricket
BRETT LEE - May have successful return to test cricket, but up til now has been poor
DEVON MALCOLM - could be devastating when he could be bothered concentrating

12th man : S. AKTAR - Didn't make starting line-up as he has bowled the odd match winning spell

I'll do my alltime under achievers One day side soon..

Have I missed anyone abvious??

Right.....I officially withdraw Flintoff from the above side......... :p

And forgetting Martin Love.Another classy batsman in the mould of mark waugh, but just could not make the cut in international cricket.
You can't say that about Love when he hardly got a proper go, he only got in because of injury and wasn't picked when there was injuries.

How about Junior Murrary?

IIRC he used smash WI domestic bowlers for fun as well?

Mark Ramprakash and Graeme Hick.

Ramps has so far scored 79 FC centuries and 121 50s yet only 2 test 100s from 92 innings.

International Regular
Alistair Campbell- very, very similar to Ken Rutherford. Tons of ability, little success. Also, although he obviously didn't play tests, Bas Zuiderent of Holland should be doing much better in ODIs. He has one last shot at redemption in the West Indies.

As a batsman, Stephen Fleming. He's been a great captain though. Not a bad fielder too.
Looking at Fleming, its not hard to see why he doesn't get many runs, his technique-like most NZ players- has too many shady areas.

maybe he's under performed by 2 runs on average(he looks good enough to average 40+) but defintely not one of the biggest under acheivers of all time.

I'd like to propose the name Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards as a huge under-achiever, certainly from the point of view of his batting.

A test match average of barely 50 does not do his talent one iota of justice, but probably says everything about his temperament.
