Having already opened the can of worms....i'm going to muddy the water a little bit more...

Fact - "In the United States, the average height of a man has drastically increased overtime and is currently at about sixty nine and a half inches. This is up an entire inch from just 1960."

Do read the book "A tall story for our time"...to really understand why we have been able to improve athletically in all the fields, and i think Cricket is no different.

As of today, we have a higher % of bowlers bowling 145 + kph than in any other era. There hasn't been anyone to break Akhtar's and Lee's record speeds, but i have practically no doubt that the record will be shattered at some point....if not by a bowler who is already bowling, it will be by a new bowler. But it will be broken nevertheless..

As an extension to that argument, i believe that if we had kept a record of all the delivery speeds up to date from 1900's or whenever, i think Akhtar and Lee would have shattered whatever existing record we had by the time these two came around....

tall != fast
Red Herring...

At no stage have i made the point tall = quick. Yao Ming, Peter Crouch and Andre the Giant can't be quicker than Dale Steyn....and i never suggested otherwise.

That's not the point i was intending to make. You are arguing a conclusion that i did not make.

I was just using the fact i posted to build an argument that we have evolved physically to be stronger. At least the average has shifted up. Having the ability to pick from a larger pool of "able bodies" to the discipline of fast bowling has a definite correlation to the increase in the number of bowlers bowling consistently over 145 kph. I've extended that a bit to the top speed record over time too.....

Are you willing to bet that Akhtar's top speed record will remain unbeaten in the next 10 years? I'm willing to bet the opposite...

stronger != faster

I tell you what I'm willing to bet, that barring some freak of nature ala usain bolt, bowlers will continue to peak at 140-150kph and there will be a couple of outliers here and there at 160.

And I bet you that's how it's been for a long time, and will continue to be.

So you say that there has always been as many players bowling 145kph plus consistently as there is today?

Prove it...

If not then that is proof that the pack has moved forward....as the pack moves forward so does the outlier.

Oh..and i knew you would chicken out of that bet.

Congrats. That is the dumbest argument on these boards ever... the lack of proof of x means the reverse of x is proved. Remind me never to have you as my lawyer in court.

BTW - watching the NZ-SA test and no-one is bowling 145, let alone "145kph plus consistently"...

Actually that's the argument of the other side. I paraphrase..."There is no proof, that bowlers are quicker now, because bowling speed was not recorded back then....so therefore bowlers were as quick back then, as they are now."

I have tried to make this debate a debate by throwing in as many facts to support my side of the argument, but have got nothing other than "that's dumb" etc, instead of offering any arguments or evidence supporting their argument....It seems the best you can come up is the performance in one game against NZ..

The way i see it, if this were a court trial, the verdict will be in my favor on the balance of probability.

I'm done arguing with idiots. By the way you can't afford me, and i don't work for idiots.

Before a mod gets all touchy...he started the personal attacks. Actually why am i bothering...go ahead and ban me.

Well done Cricket Web!!!
