Better 153 : Perera or Lara

Kusal Perera because it was more of a miracle than Genius Lara..

Barbados pitch had more Century makers than Durban pitch , and West Indies put up a 72 run partnership for the opening wicket of the 4th innings so a platform was laid for Lara , one of the 3 wickets to fall before Lara walked in for Windies was a nightwatchman , Kusal Perera walked in at 50 odd for 3 with our two best bats at the time gone (Karunaratne and Mendis).

Also Lara was lucky he was wearing a helmet cause McGrath smacked him on the back of the head and he survived a dolly drop from Healy.

Kusal Perera was playing overseas and a batsman with a sub 35 batting average should not be able to close out such a victory so that should cancel out any talk of Barbados pitch being tougher which is debatable itself because Kusal overcame his own shortcomings and the match situation its like Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson, SA bowlers have insane records at home it's usually the stick they get beaten with in player comparisons , besides Kusal was batting with tailenders worse than Ambrose and Walsh for close to 80 runs deficit , Rajitha and Vishwa are genuine No.11's..
Lara was a murderer of spin bowling, one of the greats of the game , to take on Warne and Macgill played to his strengths really whereas Kusal was the ultimate underdog.

I get it with those who think this knock was more exceptional because it was unexpected and because Kusal P is not such a great batsman to begin with or whatever. That is a different way to rating this comparison to what I would do but to each their own. Definitely very understandable from that standpoint though.

Bro Courtney Walsh had/has more FC 50's than our no.8,no.9, no.10 and no.11 in the 2019 Durban test match ...COMBINED

The low quality of that lower order Kusal Perera batted with is severely underestimated so that also adds to Kusal Perera knock , he was batting with crap 😭😅

I love McGrath and Lara is great but this still shocks me everytime.

Yeah but I dont think FC 50 is the best barometer. Walsh definitely batted with a lot of heart and put everything on the line at Barbados. Still find it hard to believe I have seen any test batsman worse than Walsh skills-wise though. :)

I mean this is being a bit ignorant just because Curtly and Courtney are famous players.

Perera basically had 3 Walsh’s and an Ambrose to bat with.

Outside of the reasons I have already mentioned (came against a better attack on a tougher pitch and was far less jammy), one other reason I rate Lara's knock greater is simply the weight of expectations. Its one thing with the way Perera played when no one thought the win was a serious possibility and he could swing his bat with gay abandon with nothing to lose. Lara was expected to win them the game from the moment he walked in and knowing how hard 4th innings chases in that era were, the fact that he actually got it done just makes it so much more better.

That was because I still think Walsh is the worst batsman to have played at the international level. And I saw Perera's knock fully. I stand by that statement. :)

Lara for me. Watched both as they happened; Lara's was a symphonic masterpiece in a seething atmosphere, with all the dynamics you'd expect from that overwrought analogy. Perera's was one of those that collect irresistible momentum and has bowlers looking resigned because every ball, however good, seems destined for the boundary and not always of the batsman's volition. It was a freak and while that doesn't necessarily detract from its greatness, it happened almost despite the batsman at its center and could just as easily have happened with some other obscure name.

Perera's had some utterly outrageous shots that still stick in the memory almost as vividly as Laras pull off McGrath or the final cover drive off Gillespie. Pumping Steyn and Rabada for massive sixes, and then that cheeky af late cut to finish it. So good.

Regardless of who's innings you think is better ( most except hb accept it's close ), I also love that he made a very important 50, in the low scoring first innings. Just an amazing overall performance.
