I don't know. Nothing in the past few months points towards that

:p

Nah you're spot on. They are good bets judging by what they have shown recently.

Dravid and Ponting for sure. I Think Jacque Khallis Can also be mentioned there. Its a tough three.

Ponting,Dravid,Kallis are the persons fighting it out currently for number 3 spot.
I'd say add in Lara and they're the 4 fighting it out for the top 4 spots.

To rank SRT above those 3 is very harsh on those 3.

Brian Lara
Tendulkar

.....

Gilchrist
Ponting
Kallis
Inzamam
Dravid

.........

Others

Though If I were to cull it to top five, I'd probably leave out Inzy and Ponting.

I wont even start another Tendulkar arguement. But to not put Tendulkar right up there would be harsh on him to put it simply.

There's no way i'd hav Inzamam in my top 5. At test level he's just not quite up to it anymore is was proved against the best - Australia.

Also at ODI level, he's too slow between the wickets and too slow around the field to be considered in the top 5 these days.

vs Australia in the recent test series :-

Inzamam-ul-Haq 1 2 0 1 1 0.50 6.66 - - 2 -

How can one test match performance prove any thing?

He played one test

Despite that I agree with you when it comes to tests. Inzy isn't top 5 IMO, but I'd rate him in the top 5 ODI batsman right now. I'd be interested to know his average in 2004, I'm sure it would have been excellent.

I think Inzi is a high class performer in both formats. As on date his batting is weighed down by the cares of captaincy. It does not suit his temprament.

Zinzan,

There's a reason when they say statistics never tell the complete story. Firstly, discarding someone off on the basis of one test is a big folly. Secondly, I don't believe the test against Australia should be counted - from all I have heard/read, It seemed quite clear that he wasn't very fit, specially in the second innings.

Anyway,
He averaged 43.33 against Aus in 1999/2000 in a series Pakistan lost 3-0.
And also averaged in the thirtees in all other series he played. [All of them played, mind you, before he reached his peak].

That's not saying that his performance against Aus has been stellar. Contrary to that it has been pretty below-par, but what wins him for me is his ability in pressure-cooker situations and his relative ease on seam-friendly wickets.

Also, if someone averages 54 in their last 20 test matches I am not going to call him 'not up to it anymore'. He still has a good 2 years left in him.

Lara's innings today has done him no harm in being regarded as still today in the top echelon of batsman, if not the best. Brilliant. :)

When Lara is on song, he's the best batsman I have ever seen, hands down. He's far from the most consistent, but he's truly amazing sometimes.
