Both. We obviously want to select people in different timezones, but no timezone will rule someones candidacy out.
Yeah, pretty much. For example, there was one stage where we only saw the need for one more Antipodean moderator, but andyc and Clapo both applied and were viewed as outstanding candidates, thus we took them both on.

Time to dust off my old Top Cat 'Thread Closed' animated .gif from when I was a mod, tbh.

I may or may not have been the only one who thought it was witty/funny/appropriate.

I know Craig made this post in jest but I can see some merit in requiring all established members to have a go at moderating just to see what the job is really like - might make some folk think more

So I propose anyone getting to 1,000 posts has to be a "trainee" mod for two weeks

No conscientious objectors and a 28 day ban for all who refuse

No exceptions, apart from staff members, obviously
Not a bad idea really.

Or, we could just make everyone moderators now for 2 weeks and see what's left when the dust settles.

Your idea probably makes the most sense though.

I think its worth considering though that just because a member's been active and reached that 1,000 post milestone, theres plenty of other factors to consider whether they'd be cut out for a moderating position - I reached 1,000 posts in ridiculously quick time on this forum and simply wouldn't have been suited, even in a trainee position, to be entrusted with some sort of moderation power.

Got to admit, still laughing at a joke at my expense 2 days later...... Can't credit CDM enough for that one :(

There's a number of discussions going on amongst the moderators on a number of issues at the moment as well as this. We would like to get those ironed out before we take on the new moderators.

I'd say hopefully within the week, anyway.

Just out of interest are the mods prepared to tell us how many serious applications there have been? - by serious I mean members with a four figure post count who appear not to be joking
